Laurena Japenga Obituary

JAPENGA,Laurena Booker, MD

Laurena Booker Japenga, MD, died on March 1, 2015, in Indian Wells, Calif., following a brief illness. Born November 6, 1927, in Greensboro, North Carolina, to William and Nina Booker, she attended the University of North Carolina and earned her MD at Duke University in 1951.

A pioneering woman in medicine, she was one of only five women in her graduating class. She completed her pediatrics residency at the University of Chicago and Mt. Zion Hospital in San Francisco--meeting her husband Jack Wallace Japenga, MD, while she was supervising his residency at the University of Chicago. They married in 1952, and Laurena worked as a pediatrician in Glendora, Covina and San Dimas. She served as Chief of Staff at San Dimas Community Hospital and was on staff at Foothill Presbyterian Hospital, Inter-Community Hospital and Queen of the Valley Hospital. She is predeceased by her husband, Jack. Survivors include her children, Bill Japenga (Liz Barrett) of Portland, Ore., Ann Japenga (Christy Porter) of Palm Springs, Calif., Chuck Japenga (Geri Japenga) of San Dimas, Calif., and Dee Dee Japenga Canzoneri (Ron Canzoneri) of San Dimas, Calif. She is also survived by grandchildren Jacob, Penelope and Joseph Johnston; two great-grandchildren; her brother, William Norman Booker, niece Suzanne Booker Canfield (John Canfield) and nephew Ray Booker (Dr. Tammy Booker) and cousins, neighbors and friends.

Laurena was known for her mechanical aptitude (fixing garbage disposals on holidays was a specialty) and her love of sports cars. While still practicing, she drove her 1950 MG TD on house calls. Since retiring to Indian Wells she became a fan of new technology, and was mastering the latest model iPad in recent weeks. Always smiling, Laurena was up for adventure, from dining in La Quinta to visiting the family in Oregon. She was unusually patient, tolerant and curious.

I miss you grandma Laurena and grandpa Jack. Not a day goes by that I don't think about you. You are a huge inspiration in everything that I do. I wish you were here to see how things have changed. I am finishing my degree in Nursing like I planned so many years ago. Trying to fulfill the legacy you passed down. I know you would be so proud and I wish we could celebrate together. They say time heals all, but I don't agree the pain still stings just as bad as it ever did. However thinking back on the wonderful memories and amazing lives you lived helps me honor your memory. I am so grateful for the time we shared. I wake up every morning to a photograph of you beside my bed, this encourages and motivates me. I love you both endlessly.

I'm very sorry to hear of Lorena's p
Passing. She was a wonderful, bright, and loving person and a great friend. I enjoyed many long conversations with both Jack and Lorena when visiting them in their homes in past years. They were both so bright and full of life. They were so much fun to visit with and had so much wisdom to share. Lorena was a very kind and patient person and a bright light in this world.

Ohhhhhhh wow,
My deeply, heartfelt sympathies to the family...and awashed in tears.

I was one of the fortunate to know Lorena and called friend as well as calling her FRIEND.
She and Jack were beloved to me, as I am

certain to a multitude of
others.
We were close and had many evenings of conversation in their homes. Always learned from Lorena and Jack and they, in gracious turn, were eager to listesten and even
encouraged thoughts in these idealogically rich discussions.
Fantastic levity was also a gift--much laughter and untreatable giggles adorned our priceless times together like the most beautiful ly wrapped gift!
I loved Lorena's jeep, and she loved it! She loved to zip to and fro'!
Heaven must have needed a gentle temperment and a feisty, oh so smart, lady.
I can see her behind ghe wheel of her jeep, right up there with the sun.
With love and adoration, also bathed in tears,
Gina Munson

Dear Ann
Our deepest sympathy for the loss of your mother. Unfortunately, we never had a chance to meet her, but knowing you, she would have been an exciting lady to know.

So sorry to hear about Lorena. She and Jack were great neighbors and friends. I must tell this story of them. My boys would venture down into the gully below their house, climbing trees and playing....so one day Lorena tells me of this. I thought maybe she would prefer they didn't at first, but then she told me they had hired a tree trimmer to go down a make the trees safer for them. They did many other wonderful and sweet things too. We were so lucky to have known them. She will be missed for sure.

This is Kevin Frejlach, your old neighbor on Cameron in Covina. I'm so sorry to hear of Laurena's passing. I was wondering if I could find out when and where there might be memorial services.

We are neighbors, living just around the corner from Laurena.
We were in awe of her determination to stay healthy, by pushing her walker up a very steep hill, quite a lot. If we were outside, she would alway stop to talk. We enjoyed her so much. She asked questions about our lives, which amazed us. Laurena also attended homeowner meetings, because she cared! What a delightful person. We will miss her inspiration.

I am lucky to have such an inspirational mother. She was loved by everybody who met her. She had so much energy and loved small adventures with friends and family. She was always up for an exploration, a walk, a drive, a visit to the museum, the zoo, or a nice meal with friends and family. I will always love you and I will never stop thinking of you and all of the memories we share. Thank you for every moment. I will see you and Dad some day in heaven. Until then!

Aunt Laurena inspired us all. Memories of her quiet grace, quick wit, extraordinary intellect, humble demeanor, and loving kindness will sustain us.

For 31 years, a most trusted friend - a fellow Southerner no matter how long we lived in California. A fellow singer of old timey hymns and lover of North Carolina barbecue. I'm keeping the hummingbird feeder filled! I will always love you.

Aw Dee Dee - and family - so sorry for the loss of your sweet mother. My best memories of her were in the mornings after I'd spent the night, she would have these beautiful breakfast spreads - waffles and such. We'd laugh and have great times. A great woman in so many ways.

What I will miss the most about my Grandmother Laurena is her love. She was so caring. I have heard so many stories of the people she helped though out her life. She was so hard working and motivated and ver independant. She exercised every morning before anyone else was awake. She owned a Jeep and went off roading, she was full of life and adventure! She was so organized, and kept extensive records filled away on everything. She was honest, kind, gentle, graceful, loyal and full of wisdom and knowlegde. I will miss you grandma, till we meet again.
