Alvin Bruce

Kessler

SHREVEPORT, LA - Services to celebrate the life of Alvin Bruce Kessler will be held Thursday, June 9, 2011 in the sanctuary of First Baptist Church of Shreveport at 11:00 am. Officiating will be Dr. Greg Hunt, former pastor of First Baptist Church. Visitation will be 4-7 pm Wednesday, June 8, 2011 at Rose-Neath Marshall Street Funeral Home. Interment will be 1:00 pm Friday, June 10, 2011 at St. Louis cemetery in Eunice, LA.

Alvin Bruce Kessler departed this earthly life for his eternal home with Jesus, the Father and many he loved who went ahead of him, at 4:40 pm June 3, 2011. Born August 14, 1926, he lived 84 years serving God, his nation, state and community. As Father Pike Thomas said at an anointing service, "Alvin was a shining example of what a senior citizen should be …he did more to improve his community and state and helped more people after he was 65 than most people do in their entire life".

Al was born in Eunice, LA., the youngest of nine children, to parents Verda Allen and William Henry Kessler. In heaven, he is now re-united with his parents, two brothers, Howard and Willis, three sisters, Lora Murrell, Ruby Kessler and baby Margaret and his first wife, Sarah Lanelle Bryant Kessler.

He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Mary Elizabeth Pender Kessler; son, Charles Willis Kessler and fianc?e, Mary Jo Myers; two wonderful granddaughters, Remi Simone Kessler and Camille Lanelle Kessler of Pueblo, Colorado. Al is also survived by his sisters, Mayme Stagg, Frances Terry, Carrie Williamson; a large number of nieces, nephews, cousins; sister-in-law, Dee Cottingham Woolsey and husband, Eddie; and a multitude of friends. Al loved his large family and was proud of their accomplishments.

Al graduated from Eunice High School and joined the Navy at age 17. He served in the Pacific Theater aboard the destroyer USS Ernest G. Small and aircraft carrier USS Siboney as Quartermaster 3rd class. He was on his way to the invasion of Japan when the bomb was dropped that ended WWII thus saving many lives, both allied and Japanese.

After an honorable discharge from the Navy, Al enrolled at LSU Baton Rouge earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration while working as an Athletic Trainer with the LSU Tiger Football team. He started his first job in 1952 with Southern Bell as a coin telephone collector. Al learned of and talked his way into the Management Training Program. Over a number of years he held various positions in New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Shreveport, Winnsboro and Monroe. In 1962 he returned to Shreveport where he remained until retirement from AT&T in 1984 as Operations Manager for the State of Louisiana. After retirement from AT&T, he worked for the Greater Shreveport Economic Development Foundation for seven years and also served as Interim Executive Vice President of the Shreveport Chamber of Commerce. Al was instrumental in bringing several industries to Shreveport while at the Chamber and later as a self-employed consultant. He attended Real Estate School and became a licensed commercial Real Estate agent. Much joy of the last years of Al's life came from being a member, officer, and President, of the Shreveport Downtown Rotary Club. Always active in civic affairs, Al's last challenge was the completion of I-49 North to the Arkansas border. After serving eight years as I-49 Coalition Chairman his health required he resign in 2010. Al did live to hear that funding for the completion of I-49 was achieved. Unable to speak, he raised his hands and clapped at the news.

Al was recognized as Outstanding Young Businessman of Baton Rouge and as 2001 Business Leader of Shreveport. He was a life member of the Lion's Club, Louisiana Industrial Development Executive Association, Southern Economic Development Council, Telephone Pioneers, and a 50 year member of the Shrine and Masonic Order. He served as VP of the Baton Rouge Junior Chamber of Commerce, VP, Executive Committee and Board of Directors of Shreveport Chamber of Commerce, Chairman of the Citizens Advisory Committee of LSU Shreveport, Chairman of the Air Force Communications and Electronics Association, helped form the Barksdale Chapter, was active with the Shreveport Executive Association, Committee of One Hundred, Bio-Medical Research Foundation, helped form The Foundation for the Arts, Music and Entertainment of Shreveport, and was appointed Metropolitan Chairman of the National Alliance of Businessmen by President Richard M. Nixon. He led many successful United Way and U.S. Savings Bond Campaigns, was a Holiday in Dixie Ambassador, active in the Cotillion Club, Plantation Club, Friends of the Louisiana State Exhibit Museum and member of the Petroleum Club. He was a member of the Delta Chi Fraternity of LSU Baton Rouge and helped form a Chapter of Delta Chi at Louisiana Tech- Ruston, working with them for 19 years.

Al was a graduate of the LSU Mid-South Executive Development Program, was a Certified Industrial Developer from the University of Oklahoma at Norman and influenced many younger developers to pursue further education and certification. He took great pleasure in seeing those he mentored accomplish more than he had.

Al was appointed by former Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco as a member of the Louisiana Executive Department State Board of Commerce and Industry.

Al was enrolled in the Cradle Role of the Baptist Church of Eunice the day after his birth and accepted Christ as his Savior at age 10. Al was a member of First Baptist Church in Shreveport for 50 years and was elected a deacon in 1964. In 2008, Al and Dr. Charles Black were named the first Honor Deacons in the Church's 166 years.

Honoring Al as pallbearers will be John Anderson, David Dodd, Forrest Dunn, Frank Mosley, Mike Philpot, Gene Powell, Dave Sandifer, John Shaw, Joe Thomas, and Gard Wayt. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be The Men's Thursday Morning Prayer Group and Dr. Robert Wilson's Sunday School Class.

The family would like to thank Dr. John C. Hardin, III for all of his medical care, support, and friendship throughout the years for Al and family members.

Al and his family are eternally grateful to Venessa James, Maria Mitchell, Ella and Melissa Patterson, Gladys Ross, Sandra Sandifer, Carla Sims, and Sherri Taylor who provided such kind, compassionate and professional care during the last several weeks.

I am a better person for having known and learned from Al. He will be sorely missed but isn't that a testament to a life well lived? He was a man of character who made sure you always knew his relationship with you was important to him. I'm thankful to have crossed his path and hopefully learned from his example.

My prayers and sympathy go to Elizabeth and the Kessler Family in the passing of Al... "Mr. I-49". Al was a great mentor, community minded citizen...and fellow Rotarian. He will be missed by the Four States Area.

Al was one of the finest people I ever worked with. His dedication to the economic development of this region is legendary. It was my great privilege to work closely with him to bring the Customs Port of Entry and the Foreign Trade Zone to the Shreveport-Bossier area. I can truly say that neither of these projects would have been completed without his involvement and support. He will be greatly missed!

Although I only experienced Al for a brief period of my life, God's timing was perfect. I was a new college grad moving to Louisiana and was excited and scared to officially start my life. AL and Elizabeth graciously opened their home to me on my journey to New Orleans. At a time when I was most impressionable, I was low on perspective, faith, (and money). Nonetheless; I was on that passage into manhood. I quickly saw AL as a mentor, friend, and new favorite family member! His hospitality, openness and warmth were overwhelming-- The likes I have rarely seen since.

To further help me at the time, he reached out to his personal contacts in New Orleans. Though a job did not come from meeting his business colleagues, I learned I was not the only one who held Al with high regard.

I will always remember AL as a man of compassion, integrity and faith. A man all men should take notes from- A man who set the bar in terms of what its is to BE a man in this world: Kind, thoughtful and humble are only a few more words I can use to describe who he was from my experience. Im sure there could be books written about his life. -where he could have written a book for all men to read.

I only hope I can be that same kind of man in my life. I will strive to teach those same values to my unborn son.

I can only imagine the loss of those who were blessed to have had AL consistently in their lives and pray grace and love to surround them now. As saddened as I was to receive the news of his passing, I cant wait to see AL again and know I will. What a reunion of his own he must be experiencing now. Thank you AL!-- for all the gifts you gave!

Al was one of the finest gentlemen I have ever met. I was fortunate and proud to call him a colleague and friend, and it is so true that he delighted in the success of his teammates. No one had more integrity. He was passionate, energetic, and sincere. A truly great man. We'll miss you, Al.

I met Mr. Kessler when I was a college student working part-time at the Shreveport Chamber of Commerce 20 years ago. Over the years, I realized he was the most positive person I knew. He always had a smile on his face and was quick to offer a friendly handshake or a pat on the back.

Al Kessler was a great inspiration to all of us . . . he truly loved God, his Country, his work, his community, and his fellow man. He will be greatly missed.

Liz,

You and Al made a great couple. As a new comer to Louisiana and Baton Rouge from Illinois both of you at different times made me feel at home. Liz you were my supervisor and I worked with Al on several South Central/BellSouth projects through the years.

My prayers are with both of you.

Best wishes,

Liz,

I apologize that I will not be able to attend Al's funeral. I am in Baton Rouge still working for AT&T after retiring in 2002, came back to work again with them in September, 2008. Just transferred to Baton Rouge on April 16, 2011, and unforturnately will not be able to be there, though I return home to Bossier City each weekend.

I can say that it was my honor to be one who was mentored and encouraged by Al and allowed the privilege to serve alongside him in Shreveport Executives Association. His words of encouragement, wisdom and instruction will never be forgotten. Things like "bulldog grip" and "success is never final" are admonitions that will not be forgotten -- i.e. they still ring in my ears. I remember with clarity contacts that he went with me on especially as he was intent on introducing me to many individuals he knew in the community. Al's principles and integrity were foremost in a world that had capitulated long ago to expediency. I was proud to be considered his employee and even more honored to be his friend.

I know that the last 27 years have slipped by like a dream, and I trust that God's grace will sustain you in the days ahead. You can trust Him to assuage your grief and comfort you with His presence. Please forgive my absence at this time.

Al is a most unforgettable character in my life and though he was twenty-two years my senior, I felt accepted as though his peer. Truly that was a great privilege.

Charles, so sorry to hear about your dad. "Big Al" (as we affectionately called Mr. Kessler back in the day on Captain Shreve Drive) helped me out on several occasions during and after college with career advice. I last saw your dad when he kindly attended the memorial service for my mom in 2002. Please accept my condolences.

The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to Alvin Bruce Kessler our Brother-in-Arms and fellow Legionnaire. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Al. And to Al it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to tAl him for the devoted and selfless service he rendered to his country during WW-II while serving in the U.S. Navy and for more than 45 years of dedicated service to the American Legion Post 14. Al you were a valued Legionnaire, a wonderful comrade, and a true Patriot. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at Ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 1,307 members of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to Al’s family and loved ones.
