James Lamar Stall

Shreveport, LA - James Lamar Stall died Thursday, February 7, 2013, after a brief illness. He was 94 years old. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 12, 2013, in the sanctuary of First United Methodist Church, followed by a reception in the Hunter Activities Building. Officiating will be Dr. Pat Day, assisted by Dr. Donald Webb. Interment will be in Forest Park Cemetery, following a private graveside service.

Mr. Stall was born on September 19, 1918, in Gibsland, Louisiana. He graduated from Louisiana Tech University with a B.S. degree in accounting and attended Graduate School at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. In 1959, he was named an Alfred P. Sloan Fellow and studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, MA, where he graduated with an S.M. degree in Industrial Management.

After serving in the European Theatre in World War II, he and his wife, Johnette, settled in Shreveport where he was employed by Burroughs Adding Machine Company. In 1946, he was employed by Southwestern Electric Power Company, now SWEPCO/AEP, and served as Accountant, Controller, Executive Vice-President, and President/Chief Executive Officer.

During those years, Mr. Stall served as director of the Edison Electric Institute, Arkansas State Chamber of Commerce, and Pioneer Bank and Trust Company, now Capital One Bank. He served as the President of the local chapter of the National Association of Accountants and on the national level was Director and Vice President.

He served on Shreveport Chamber of Commerce, Committee of 100, the Board of Directors of the Louisiana State Fair Association, the board of the Young Men's Christian Associations. In 1978, he was presented the United Way's Clyde E. Fant Memorial Award for community service. He was also named by Louisiana Tech University's College of Business Administration as the 1972 "Outstanding Alumnus."

In his later years, Mr. Stall had great pride in the opening of the J. Lamar Stall Unit in Arsenal Hill, June, 2010, SWEPCO's newest plant in the Shreveport area and serving the Ark-La-Tex. He also had more time to devote to his 60 year allegiance to the Boston Red Sox.

A long time member of First United Methodist Church, he was a member of the Maida Mickle Couples Class, whose members have continued to support him in recent years.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Lindon Crisp Stall and Lillian Harrison Stall, and his wife of 60 years, Johnette Adger Stall.

He is survived by son, Lindon A. Stall and wife, Patricia, of Thibodaux, Louisiana, daughter, Kathryn Bruns, and husband, Jeremy, of Nacogdoches, TX, and grandson, James Brady McCollough, of Pittsburgh, PA.

Honorary pallbearers are Richard H. Shirley, Breck Scott, John Harris, John O. Hayter, Al Hammett, Toby Abney, William H. Lacefield, Les Dillahunty, Graham Dodson, Jerry Googe, Ric Shatford, James Van Hook, Jerry D. Allen, Thomas A. Rogers, Forest Conley, and Arthur Carmody.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Bio-Medical Research Foundation of Shreveport and the Gibsland United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 670, Gibsland, LA 71028.

Many friends and neighbors enabled him to live independently until his death, but special thanks to neighbors Stacy and Breck Scott. And heartfelt thanks to the staff of the MICU at LSU Medical Center for their wonderful care in his final days.

I checked on Mr. Stall several times over the last couple years, and each time I was there I remembered thinking to myself and even told Mr. Stall that I hope to be as sharp minded as he is when I get to be his age, and that is if I am even fortunate enough to live long enough to reach his age and be in the great shape he was. It was always a pleasure to visit with him and talk about the early SWEPCO days. He was such an important part of the SWEPCO heritage, and I could tell the SWEPCO family was still very important to him.

The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to James Lamar Stall our “Brother-in-Arms”. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for James. And to James it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the devoted and selfless service he rendered to his country during WW-II while serving in the U.S. Army. James, you are a true patriot, who served with honor and distinction. You upheld the finest qualities of an American patriot warrior: courage, commitment, generosity, sacrifice, love and devotion to family and country. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at Ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 1,261 military veteran Legionnaires of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to James' family and loved ones.

Mr. Stall was such a class act. He was respected by everyone. It is such a shame that businessmen of today don't model themselves after him. I will always remember him.
