FRANK AGUGLIARO Obituary

Frank Agugliaro, 89
NYC police officer, WWII Merchant Marine veteran, business owner, lived in Midland Beach
Frank Agugliaro, 89, the devoted patriarch of his family, passed away on June 11, 2017, surrounded by his loving family.
Frank was born in Manhattan, moved to New Dorp Beach and eventually settled in Midland Beach with his family. A man of many talents, Frank was a retired NYC police officer, WWII Merchant Marine veteran and longtime business owner.
Frank joined the Merchant Marine in 1944, still a teenager. He served with distinction as a bosun's mate in the Atlantic and Pacific and Mediterranean serving on several ships. He received several medals and was honorably discharged in 1946. Frank was very proud of his service and could be seen every day wearing his Merchant Marine Veterans jacket and hat.
He was member of the Staten Island Chapter of the American Merchant Marine Veterans and attended several memorials honoring Merchant Marine service during World War II. Sadly, he was one of very few surviving members of the small group of World War II Merchant Marine Veterans.
Frank became a NYC bus driver on Staten Island for 13 years before he became a NYC Housing Police Officer assigned to the Anti-Crime Unit serving all five boroughs. Frank received many commendations during his long career, but one unexpected honor stands out among them. In the 1960s while on assignment, he delivered a baby, and to his delight, he soon learned that the newborn was to be named after him. He retired in 1982, and then obtained his private investigator's license and worked on several cases.
Mr. Agugliaro also started the family trucking company, F & A Trucking in the early '60s. He would park his trucks in the backyard of the family home in Midland Beach. All of his children played in and worked on the trucks with him. In 1971 the business relocated to Charleston and became A.K.R. Enterprises, Inc. where his three sons, John, Frank, and Richard worked for many years. Affectionately called The Yard by the entire family, his children and grandchildren would all visit to ride bikes, take rides in trucks and machines, help work the equipment and have BBQ's. The business still operates today with his son, John, running the business for the past 17 years.
Frank was known as the family handyman, and was called upon often to repair things. He cherished time with his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and his great-great-grandchild. He enjoyed traveling with his wife. He loved hosting holiday gatherings of family friends and workers in his home and would invite everyone he knew. He was caring and a generous man to all who knew him.
He enjoyed luncheons at the Staaten with his good friends from the Merchant Marine Veterans Group as well as his longtime friend Charlie Nalbone. Frank had a daily routine which would start with a visit to the barber every morning and then proceed to his favorite breakfast spot, Perkins, where all the waitresses knew him. He would drop in on a different family member every day. From there he would visit his dear wife Marjorie's grave in Resurrection Cemetery, where all the staff and workers knew him and would call him by name. He will be greatly missed by his entire family.
Mr. Agugliaro was predeceased by his cherished wife of 62 years, Marjorie, in 2010. He was the loving father of Mary Jane Stagno (the late Raymond), John Agugliaro (Patricia), Frank Agugliaro (Cathy), Marjorie Lauria (Thomas), Richard Agugliaro (Loretta), Barbara Agugliaro, and his cherished daughter, the late Kathy Longo; proud and adoring grandfather of 21 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and great-great-grandfather of one. He was predeceased by his great-grandsons, David Salvatore Stagno II and Raymond Charles Wood.
A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. on Friday at John Vincent Scalia Home for Funerals, Inc., located at 28 Eltingville Blvd., Staten Island, N.Y. 10312. Interment will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Staten Island, N.Y. The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday, June 15, 2017, at John Vincent Scalia Home for Funerals, Inc.
