Henry Murad Obituary
Celebrating the Life of Henry Murad (1923-2023)
Henry Murad, a remarkable man of integrity, perseverance, and unwavering passion, passed away in 2023 at the age of 100-a milestone he set out to achieve with determination and grace. A vibrant and accomplished individual, Henry remained active and engaged in life's pursuits until his final days, dedicating himself to writing, painting, and staying connected to the world around him.
Born in Baghdad, Iraq, in 1923, Henry grew up during a time when the city was a flourishing cultural hub, home to a thriving Jewish community that had lived there for centuries. Henry's early life reflected the harmony of the era, and he flourished as a bright and curious student. After earning his pharmacy degree from the University of Baghdad, he practiced his trade with diligence and care. However, as the sociopolitical climate in Iraq began to shift, Henry, like many others in the Jewish community, chose to leave.
In 1947, he arrived in New York City to build a new life, carrying little more than his education and an indomitable spirit. Despite his credentials, Henry was required to requalify and earn a degree from Columbia University's School of Pharmacy. With resilience and dedication, he forged a new path, eventually purchasing Buckingham Chemists, a renowned pharmacy on the corner of 57th Street and Sixth Avenue-now a part of New York City's prestigious Billionaire's Row.
Under Henry's stewardship, Buckingham Chemists became a beacon of excellence, celebrated for its impeccable service and curated selection of luxury skincare, cosmetics, and fragrances. Over the years, the pharmacy attracted a distinguished clientele, including luminaries such as pianist Van Cliburn, actor Jerry Lewis, producer Bob Fosse, musician Gato Barbieri, industrialist Harry Helmsley, and even shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis. Henry's discretion, warmth, and dedication to his customers made him beloved by all who frequented his store.
Among the many highlights of his career, Henry took great pride in his family's entrepreneurial spirit, particularly the success of his youngest brother, Dr. Howard Murad, whose globally cherished Murad skincare brand (proudly sold at his drugstore) became a cornerstone of the clinical beauty industry and was eventually acquired by Unilever. Howard's achievements were a constant source of pride for Henry, exemplifying the values of hard work and innovation that defined their family.
In addition to his contributions to pharmacy, Henry was a prolific writer, authoring eight books, including memoirs of his extraordinary life and explorations of the history of art and pharmacy. Sharing his work brought him immense joy, and he made it a priority to gift signed copies to all his children and grandchildren. His books, which are available on Amazon, remain a lasting testament to his intellectual curiosity and love for storytelling.
In 2000, after decades of hard work, Henry retired when his lease was not renewed. Undaunted, he embraced this new chapter of life with the same vigor that defined him. He became a hospital volunteer, applying his pharmaceutical expertise to help others, and pursued his passion for the arts, studying painting, drawing, and sculpture at Hunter College.
Henry also found immense joy in traveling the world with his beloved wife, Doris, and their family, exploring Europe, Asia, and beyond. His retirement was marked by a renewed closeness to his children and grandchildren, whose company he cherished deeply. A devoted family man, Henry's wisdom, humor, and resilience were a source of inspiration to all who knew him.
When asked how he coped with the challenges of aging, Henry's response was characteristically simple and profound: "You deal with it." This philosophy encapsulated his approach to life-a relentless focus on perseverance, purpose, and gratitude.
Henry's legacy lives on through his wife of 70 years, Doris Murad, his children Valerie, Vivian, and Richard, as well as his eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. His extraordinary journey, marked by hard work, love, and an enduring zest for life, serves as a testament to the values he held dear.
Henry Murad was more than a pharmacist, an artist, or a father; he was a man who made the world a better place by touching lives with kindness, humility, and quiet strength. He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
