SOUTH BEND - Michael Eugene Johnson, 30, died in his home Friday evening, Oct 5, at 5:15 p.m., after a long struggle with brain cancer. Mike was born on July 4, 1977, the second child of the late Rev. Dwight L. Johnson and Patricia (Shaefer) Johnson in Crumstown, Indiana. Mike attended Christian Center School through eighth grade and Riley High School in South Bend. He pastored Gospel Truth Church, a home fellowship church, until the last few months, when he was to ill to continue regularly. He also had done volunteer work for Youth For Christ in St. Joseph County, Camp Crossfire near Grinnel, Iowa and other evangelistic efforts. Mike's hobbies were Bible study, Frisbee golf, his dog, Pharaoh, camping, fishing, recruiting voters for the Republican Part and traveling. He is survived by his mother, Trish Shaefer of South Bend; two grandmothers, Mary Shaefer and Marion Johnson, both of South Bend; a brother, Josh (Jenny) Johnson of Fowler, IN; a sister, Chloe-formerly Charity (David) Mason of Charlotte, North Carolina; a niece; two nephews and a number of aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends. He was preceded in death by his father, The Rev. Dwight L. Johnson; and both grandfathers, Ralph E. Johnson and Eugene M. Shaefer. A service of Christian Memorial will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10 in River Park United Methodist Church, 920 S. 23rd Street. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. immediately before the services. His brother, the Rev. Joshua D. Johnson, pastor of the Fowler Wesleyan Church, Fowler, IN will be the officiant. His ashes will be interred at a later date. Flowers are welcome but if one prefers to make a memorial contribution, please do so to Pet Refuge.
