William P. Kelley obituary, 1962-2017, Plymouth, MA

William Kelley Obituary

William P. Kelley passed away peacefully, at home, following a lengthy illness, in the early hours of April 6, 2017. Bill was born April 7, 1962, to Thomas and Margaret Kelley of Mattapan. He was the fourth of their seven children. Bill was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Margaret. Bill graduated from Boston College High School in 1981 and from MIT in 1985 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. At MIT, Bill became the first Catholic President of Zeta Beta Tau Fraternity, a traditionally Jewish Fraternity. He went on to work for Adams-Russell, GTE, and then for General Dynamics. Professionally, Bill developed groundbreaking communication equipment and satellite prototypes; one of his contributions can be seen in the National Air and Space Museum in Washington D.C. Bill was the recipient of many professional awards and was held in high esteem by his colleagues whom he, in turn, held in the highest regard. Bill was also an amateur magician, which led him to volunteer at church, Sacred Heart School, and community functions bringing joy and entertainment to all who saw him. He always had his pockets filled with tricks and would be surrounded by his nieces, nephews, and their children wherever he went. Bill loved to spend hours playing Whist and Cribbage with his parents, wife and siblings. As accomplished as Bill was professionally, it was his family who gave him the most joy. He is survived by his devoted wife Lauren (Barnes) Kelley and his two dear children, William, Jr. and Mary Louise all of Plymouth. William is also survived by his beloved father, Thomas J. Kelley, of Weymouth, his two sisters Margaret (and Martin) Joyce and Mary (and Patrick) Hurley of Braintree. He is survived by his four brothers Bernard (and Kathryn) Kelley of Brockton, Thomas (and Deborah) of Bridgewater, Arthur (and Paula), and Michael (and Anne) of Braintree. Bill dearly loved his brothers and sisters and their families. He is survived by twenty-two nieces and nephews as well as eight great-nieces and nephews. Bill was predeceased by his mother Margaret and his great-niece Penelope Joy Stellman. The funeral will take place on Monday from the Cartmell Funeral Home, 150 Court Street, Plymouth at 9:15 Monday, followed by a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Kateri Tekakwitha Parish, 126 South Meadow Road, Plymouth. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend visiting hours Sunday 4-7. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, West Roxbury. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of William Kelley may be made to St. Kateri Tekakwitha Parish, 126 South Meadow Road, Plymouth, MA 02360 or Sacred Heart School, 399 Bishops Highway, Kingston, MA 02364. Very sad to hear of Bill's passing. Bill was the best man at my wedding and a great friend at ZBT where he had a lot to do with convincing me to join there. I remember one time walking to school together and I was talking about "parking cars" with my Midwest accent and he was talking about "backpacking" with his Boston accent and we had the conversation going on for several minutes before realizing we were talking about something different. A great guy and will be sorely missed. I send prayers on behalf of the family.

I worked with Bill for many years at General Dynamics. He was a wonderful person and an outstanding engineer. I enjoyed very much talking to him not just about work, but his family, magic, and Catholic devotion. Everybody who came in contact with him found him to be friendly and ready to help. It saddens me greatly that Bill left all of us far too soon. My sincerest condolences to his family. We all are blessed to have known Bill.

Words cannot express the loss I know that you, his family and friends, are feeling. Thoughts cannot share the rich memories and influence I've seen Bill have on others. Hearts may seem on the verge of breaking, but the way that Bill lives on in ours soothes, and over time, will help heal. Wishing you the Grace that Bill exemplified and extended to me personally.

Shocked and heartbroken to read this. Bill and I were ZBT pledge class brothers and roommates for most of freshman year. For the guys in the fraternity, Bill was our connection to the real Boston -- Dorchester, specifically -- that existed beyond campus, beyond Back Bay, beyond leafy Brookline. He introduced us to the challenges of candlepin bowling at Boston Bowl. He served honorably in several fraternity offices, culminating in the presidency, in which role he did a great deal to improve our house's relationship with our neighbors. Requiescat in pace, Bill.

I worked with Bill for about 8 years and have nothing but really good things to say about him that could fill a book. He always had the time of day to listen, help with work problems however simple or complex, and always maintained a positive attitude no matter how difficult the situation. I will miss his guidance, honesty and congeniality and I know his absence will leave a great void at the office. To his family I extend my deepest sympathy and recognition of their sorrow at his passing. Some one once told me that a person dies twice. First when they physically leave us and the second when their name is last mentioned on this earth. I know Bill's name will be mentioned by many people for many many decades.
