Mardelle SHAGOOL Obituary

Spokane - Mardelle Fletcher Shagool was born in Fort Riley, KS on August 16, 1936 to Rose Stamm Fletcher and Arthur Fletcher. She is joined by older brother Gary and younger brother Michael. Mardelle was an excellent student and athlete in high school, earning Valedictorian honors and playing competitive basketball and golf in high school and after. She met her husband Jack Shagool when he was teaching and coaching at Junction City High School in Junction City, KS. They were married on August 27, 1954 and enjoyed 60 years of marriage before Jack passed away on November 16, 2014. Mardelle played on an AAU basketball team (coached by her husband Jack) that finished 2nd in the national tournament in the 1950's. She played local tournament golf in Kansas for several years before giving birth to her three children Scott, Stacey, and Chuck. She was a stay at home mom from 1958 to 1974 when she started working at Joseph Jantz High School as a secretary. In 1979 she took a job in the Registrar's Office at Whitworth College. She eventually worked her way up to be Associated Registrar at Whitworth. While at Whitworth, Mardelle earned her Bachelor's Degree in English which fulfilled a life-long dream that had been put on the back burner when she married right after graduating from high school. She made many friends at Whitworth and volunteered her time in the Women's Auxiliary and even served as president of that group. She enjoyed skiing, golfing, and watching her children and grandchildren in their sports and activities. In her 60's, she took up competitive swimming and held many local state and even national records in the freestyle and backstroke events. Mardelle had many friends in her Thursday Girls group which focused on arts and crafts, reading and writing and the Biker Babies who skied, rode bicycles, and kayaked together for over 40 years. She volunteered with the Union Gospel Mission and was a faithful member of Northwood and Whitworth Presbyterian Churches for many years. Mardelle was a strong, passionate, and caring woman who loved her friends, children, grandchildren, brothers, nieces, and nephews. She passed away at Hospice House of Spokane after a long battle with Alzheimer's and was met at heaven's gates by her beloved husband Jack. She Is survived by her brothers Gary and Michael, children Scott (Jill), Stacey (Keith Ward), and Chuck (Marsha), grandchildren Scott, Brett, Jessica, Nick, Jared, and J.D, and great grandchildren Emery, Cooper, and Laney who was born one week after she passed, and many nieces and nephews.
