Joy Carpenter Obituary

Joy Tieder Carpenter died peacefully in her sleep on November 04, 2022, surrounded by her family. At the time of her death, she was 94 years old having been born on December 25, 1927 in Cambridge, Maryland. Joy was the youngest child of John Henry Tieder and Lena Phortner Tieder both of whom emigrated to this country from Germany before settling first in Baltimore and then in the Cambridge area. Joy graduated from Cambridge High School in 1944. After her graduation, she attended and graduated from the Wilmington General Hospital School of Nursing as a registered nurse in 1949. Her interest in nursing was established while she cared for her ailing father while she was a teenager. She grew up in the St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Cambridge and later became a member of the First Baptist Church also in Cambridge.

Following her graduation from nursing school, she embarked on a lifelong career in nursing which she loved dearly. From 1950 through 1953, she worked at the Cambridge Maryland Hospital as a nurse. While working at the hospital, she met her husband James F. Carpenter (Jim) who also was employed by the hospital. They married on April 26, 1952 and remained married for 64 years until his death in 2017. In 1959, she became employed by the Dorchester County Health Department where she remained employed, until her retirement in 1988. While employed at the Health Department she was the nurse coordinator at the Mental Health Clinic. She retired in 1988.

Following her retirement, she became very active in volunteering for various causes that were of interest to her. She volunteered for years at the Cambridge Maryland Hospital. She served on the Board of Dorchester Community Services, Channel Markers Inc., the Channel Marker Foundation and the Cambridge Library. She also volunteered for the American Cancer Society and was a reading tutor. In 1994, She was selected as the Dorchester County Volunteer of the Year "You are Beautiful" award which she received in Annapolis, Maryland from then Governor William Donald Schafer.

Joy is survived by her three children John Edward (Jack) of Washington, D.C. Jane Bowers (John) Hurlock, Maryland, JoAnne Kelly Georgetown Massachusetts. She is also survived by her three grandchildren Rebecca Emily Davis (Trey) of Cambridge, Erica Jane Thomas (CJ) also of Cambridge, Aidan Kelly of Bloomfield Connecticut, one step granddaughter Allison Kelly Salem of Connecticut and one great granddaughter Charli Reese Thomas also of Cambridge. She was preceded in death by her husband Jim, sisters Roslyn Elliott, Hazel Ero and three brothers John, Robert and Ernest Tieder and a foster sister Betty Conkins of Crookston Minnesota. Other survivors include her nieces Rosemary Noble, Columbia Maryland and Cynthia Bourquard West Newberry Massachusetts and nephew Jim Ero of Jacksonville Beach Florida.
