Norman Smith Obituary

EASTON - Norman Steffens Smith, a loving husband, terrific Dad and community volunteer, died at the Talbot Hospice House, Easton, MD, on Monday, May 28, 2018. He was 84.
Born in Easton on November 9, 1933, he was the son of the late John Walter and Pansy M. Steffens Smith. A 1951 graduate of Easton High School, he shortly thereafter earned his Private Pilot's License at Newnam Field in Easton.
On December 18, 1954, he married his high school sweetheart, the former Jacqueline Jean Coulby, who died October 30, 2004.
Soon after his marriage, he began his career at the Bethlehem Steel Shipyard in Sparrows Point. While at Bethlehem Steel, he continued his education at the University of Maryland, where he earned his Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering. "Stormin Norman", as he was affectionately known by his staff, rose to the position of General Superintendent of the shipyard. He retired after 42 years of service with the shipyard to begin the next phase of his life.
After retirement, he kept busy by consulting with shipyards across the United States on compliance and safety standards and as an adjunct professor, teaching workforce classes at Chesapeake College as well as onsite at many Eastern Shore businesses.
A member of the Miles River Sail and Power Squadron, he held the grade of Advanced Pilot and was the Education Officer at the time of his death. He had served the squadron in many capacities including Commander in 2013. He was a Vessel Safety Check Inspector for many years, taught numerous boating courses and was active in many community squadron activities including Safe Boating for Kids, Prescription Drug Recovery, Monofilament Line Recycle and Proper Marine Radio usage.
An active member of Christ Church in Easton, his passions included spending time on the Chesapeake Bay cruising its many tributaries with his family and friends and caring for his special dog "Shelly".
Devoted to his family, he is survived by three children, Steffeny Coulby Tremain and her husband, Allen Tremain, of Los Altos, CA, Mary Lindsay Riehl and her husband, Pickett Riehl, Jr. of Cockeysville, MD, and Jeffrey Grant Smith and his wife, Lynn Lucke Smith, of Easton, MD; five grandchildren, Pickett Riehl III, Coulby Elizabeth Riehl, Katherine Moran Riehl, Amy Coulby Quillen and Charles Lucke Cox; and three great-grandchildren.
Another son, Robert Steffens Smith, died in 1955.
