David Rebovich Obituary

REBOVICH Dr. David Rebovich, 58, Rider assistant professor David P. Rebovich, Ph.D., our loving father, son, and brother died on Friday, Oct. 12, 2007, at Capital Health System, Fuld Campus, Trenton. He was 58. Funeral services will be on Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2007, at 9 a.m. from the Costello-Greiner Funeral Home, 44 Green St., Woodbridge, followed at 10 a.m. with a Funeral Liturgy at Saint Nicholas Byzantine Church, Perth Amboy. Interment will be in the church cemetery, Perth Amboy. Visiting will be on Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Parastas services will be on Tuesday at 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Born in Perth Amboy, Dr. Rebovich resided in Hamilton Square for the past 22 years. Dr. Rebovich was a 1967 graduate of Perth Amboy High School and was inducted into the Perth Amboy High School Hall of Fame in April of 1996. He received his bachelor of arts degree in political science in 1971 from Johns Hopkins University and then attended Rutgers University, receiving his masters degree in 1974, and Ph.D. in 1978, both in political science. He began his academic career as an instructor at Rutgers University and eventually taught at Kean College and Montclair State College. In 1979, Dr. Rebovich became an assistant professor of political science at Rider College, where he held many positions over the past 28 years, including assistant dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Science and chairman of the Political Science Department. He was presently serving as managing director of the Rider University Institute of New Jersey Politics and associate professor of political science at Rider University in Lawrenceville. He was a prolific contributor to the New Jersey political scene, having written a weekly column for the Trentonian and Times of Trenton newspapers in Trenton, as well as having made contributions as a guest columnist for the New York Times, Philadelphia Inquirer, New Jersey Monthly, The Economist, the New Republic, and other newspapers and magazines. Dr. Rebovich was a current weekly contributor to politicsnj.com and also provided commentary for many radio and television stations in the New Jersey area. Surviving are a daughter, Melissa Rebovich of Hamilton Square; his parents, Gloria Nemyo and George Rebovich Sr. of Perth Amboy; two brothers and their wives, Nadine Sedor and George Rebovich Jr., and Lisa Harrison and Kurt Rebovich Sr., of Perth Amboy; two nieces, Gayle and Samantha, and a nephew, Kurt Jr. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Dr. David P. Rebovich Family -- My husband (David) and I were very sorry to learn of Dr. Robovich's passing. He was our professor for Poly Sci back in the '80s at Rider then College. Dr. R. was an honorable and kind man and we are truly saddened by this terrible loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this very sad time.

On behalf of my brother, Stanley (Skipper) Swist, PAHS '65, and me, PAHS '70, we wish to extend our deepest sympathy to the entire family. Dave and Skip played baseball together in high school and was always so nice to me, the "little sister", whe I tagged along to the games! When I started reading about Dave in the newspapers practically daily, I thought, WOW! Way to go, Dave! We will always have fond memories of him.

I was lucky enough to be one of the first students to have Dave Rebovich for a teacher at Rider. I'll never forget his humor, his genuineness and his passion for his subject and for teaching. He was an inspiration in more ways and to more people then he ever would have imagined. In recent years, it made me proud to see that he was getting great recognition as a widely respected political pundit. My deepest condolensces to his family, friends, co-workers and everyone who will miss him dearly.

I first met Dave Rebovich in 1963, when he was a freshman sports reporter for the Perth Amboy High School newspaper, The Periscope, and I was the sports editor. Over the years, I followed his career, and was always proud to see him--a Perth Amboy boy--quoted in various prestigious media outlets. Words cannot express how sorry I am for your loss. I attend Rider University from 1994-1998. I met Dr. Rebovich because my mom recongnized him during freshman orientation. She went to high school with him and introduced me. From that day on Dr. Rebovich was always there for me no matter what I needed. He was the best. Although I never had him as a professor, he was a wonderful mentor for me. My condolences go out to his entire family.

I graduated with the Rider University C/O 2006. I had Dr. Rebovich for 3 or 4 classes and I will always remember what a great person/professor he was. He took the time to relate to everyone in his classes. He was an all around fabulous person and will be remembered forever in my eyes as one of the best teachers I have EVER had.My sincere condolences to his entire family.
