Hazel May Obituary

Hazel Carolyn May
Loving mother and grandmother, staff member at Lyons VA, 'a second mother' to the youth in her East Orange neighborhood
Hazel Carolyn May of East Orange, N.J., daughter of the late Eugene Bishop and Lois Lassiter, was born Aug. 11, 1952, in Rich Square, N.C., and entered into eternal rest on May 2, 2019, at Kity Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro, N.C.
Hazel received her education in the Newark public schools and Essex County College. In April of 1969, she was united in marriage to the love of her life, the late James May Sr. The union was blessed with three lovely children.
For many years Hazel worked in the library at the VA Lyons Hospital in Lyons, N.J., where she enjoyed helping the veterans. Hazel was an accomplished seamstress for over 40 years. She enjoyed reading, arts and crafts, and researching African American studies.
She always offered words of encouragement and wisdom to the neighborhood youth and was cherished by many as a second mother. Hazel was immensely proud of her family and leaves behind nothing but beautiful memories.
Hazel is survived by her two loving daughters, Kimberly May and Kenya Eason; son, James May Jr.; son-in-law, Isaac Eason Jr. and three grandchildren who she absolutely adored: Isaac Eason III, Jamie May and Kyra Eason, and a host of other relatives and friends.
Services will be private. Arrangements are by Stevens Funeral Home, Wilson, N.C.
In lieu of flowers and in loving memory of Hazel, please make donations to The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, komen.org/Donate/

Mrs. Hazel May, known to us as Mrs. May was our designated chauffeur/babysitter who escorted the neighborhood kids to the movies, we remember and cherish this kind of love, while other parents were telling us we were to loud, Mrs. May embraced us, kept us busy and out of trouble, we love and we will NEVER forget you, Sincerely Danielle Buchanan

I so wish I had a picture to post. My memories of Mrs. May are so awesome, cause even in times when she was giving us a stern talking to it was in such a funny way I always got a kick out of it, not to mention we were all so much taller than her even as kids. Mrs. May would be preaching away at us, and we would be giggling but I hope she knew I was listening even thru the giggles I learned alot. I will Always remember Mrs. May
