CAROLINE MCKENZIE YORK HUTTON

OCT. 5, 1922 - MAY 30, 2012

Caroline McKenzie York Hutton after a brief illness and in the presence of her family and friends passed from this earth on May 30, 2012 at her residence in Elon, NC. She was born on October 5, 1922 in High Point, NC to Cicero Arthur York and Mary Bruner York in High Point, NC. She was the faithful and loving wife of Iredell Sidney Hutton for 63 years before his death in 2005. Her parents, her two brothers Arthur and Brandon York are deceased as her sister Betsy York King. She is survived by her four children - Susan Hutton Goss and her husband Glenn Goss of Gibsonville, her son John Hutton and his wife Katy O'Neill of Oak Island, son Stephen Hutton and his wife Pam of Apex and son Henry Hutton and his wife Jeannie of Raleigh. With them she leaves behind seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Caroline was a graduate from High Point University and UNC in Greensboro with degrees in education. She taught primary grades for 28 years beginning in Trinity, NC, but mostly in Burlington at Hillcrest, Sellars Gunn, and Eastlawn elementary Schools. Being a teacher and avid reader she promoted higher education at every turn. She was an active member of the North Carolina Association of Educators during her teaching career and after her retirement. She loved poetry, studied greatly in politics and religion, was a lifelong registered Democrat, a member of the American Business Woman's Association and a strong advocate for Women's Rights. Through the years with her family and many friends she had a patient, caring, understanding and open mind, found wonderful conversation thereby giving as well as receiving great love. In more recent years Caroline enjoyed the company of many friends in her retirement community at The Hamlet and Blakey Hall.

During her life she enjoyed travels to Europe with friends and especially to Great Britain with her husband for big band music concerts. Most favored trips were to North Carolina beaches with her grandkids. She loved kitties, butterflies, the salt air, a cool hammock in the breeze, sand and surf, birds and sea shells, and walking and seeing the beauty which surrounded her days. She believed in living life fully with adventures and in the now.

Her most gratifying experience in community service was her devotion in the establishment of the Unity Church - the Center for Spiritual Living in Graham, NC where she was an active member. She was a strong financial supporter of Burlington's Residential Treatment Service and the associated Trollinger's Treasures store that gave aid to those in need. She served 20 years as a member of the Alamance and Caswell County Mental Health Board.

The celebration of her life service is scheduled for 2pm Sunday June 3, 2012 at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel, at 2205 South Church Street in Burlington, NC., officiated by Rev. Sandra Swift. Family will receive friends from 1:00 pm to 1:45 pm prior to the service. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Center for Spiritual Living at 309 Maple Street, Graham, NC 27253 or Hospice League of Alamance-Caswell at 914 Chapel Hill Road in Burlington, NC 27215.

It has been said that when the student is ready, the teacher will come. The other side of that truth is that when the students are ready, the teacher will depart. May God receive Mrs. Hutton and grant her rest from her teaching -- both in the classroom and outside the classroom.
