I've had the once-in-a-lifetime pleasure of working with Bernie at The Spectator from 1981 onward. I've also known his amazing generosity. His kind doesn't come along often. He will be missed.

I last visited my friends Bernie and Katie in December along with Godfrey Cheshire. Bernie did not look his best, but was as full of fire as ever. I have always appreciated his passion. Regardless of the subject, Bernie never failed to have an opinion. Agree or not, Bernie stood his ground without disrespect even if you might be wrong and he knew it. He had this ability to push people to be their best and occasionally to those closest to him with great vitriol. I believe for some that this was out of love and respect.
I met Bernie in the late 1980s at Spectator, but came to know him best as a colleague and friend during the production of our documentary film Moving Midway with Godfrey. On Feb 16, 2018, Godfrey and I corresponded about Bernie's impending demise. Here is an excerpt of mine:
It's very sad. No words to really describe my feelings, yet I know this is even more difficult for you. He is perhaps the most unloveable, loveable person I have ever known. Even if I didn't agree with him, I have always had the utmost respect for his comments and perspectives. He could be incredibly entertaining. How do you describe a person who is indescribable? We are both very fortunate to have spent as much time with him as we did. I will always envy you for that extra time; the accolades and criticism. I hope to go see him next week without the tears in my eyes that I have now.
Regrettably I never made it. I will miss Bernie greatly as I know we all will. He is truly irreplaceable and the void he leaves, impossible to fill. RIP, my friend.

I have been working at the club for about twenty years now and have been fortunate to have many conversations with Mr. Reeves. Six years ago I lost my son. It takes a brave person to reach out to someone going through such a tragedy. Mr. Reeves and I messaged back several times through the hardest of days I have ever known. His support was immeasurable during that period. When a person is brave enough to reach out to someone, sometimes the person can reach themselves. Mr. Reeves helped me reach myself. I am deeply saddened by your loss. I am sure you will have many reach out to you.
