Alfred Martin Obituary
(05/14/2003)  Dr. Alfred Martin, longtime Austin resident and retired University of Texas, College of Pharmacy professor died in Houston, Monday, May 12, after a prolonged illness. Dr. Martin, C. R. Subleft Professor Emeritus, joined the UT Austin faculty in 1973. Before that he was Dean and professor at Temple University and taught at Purdue University and the Medical College of Virginia School of Pharmacy. He served as director of UT's Drug Dynamics Institute from its founding in 1973 through 1978. A pioneer in physical pharmacy, Dr. Martin is the author of the first textbook in the field entitled ``Physical Pharmacy- Physical Chemical Principles in Pharmaceutical Science.'' He authored the widely used text through four editions beginning in 1962. It has been translated into three languages. Dr. Martin's professional achievement has been recognized by numerous awards including the Ebert Medal, an annual research award of the America Pharmaceutical Association; Research Achievement of the Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences; the Julius Sturmer Memorial Lecture Award of the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science; the Rho Chi Award and the Kauffman Lecture Award of Ohio State University. He received his BA degree from Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science and his MA and PhD from Purdue University. In 1962 he served as Pfeiffer Research Fellow, Center of Applied Wave Mechanics, Paris, France and lived in Paris with his family for a year. During World War II he served as a torpedo bomber pilot in the Marine Corps Air Wing and was decorated with the Navy Air Medal and Navy Gold Star. Dr. Martin is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary Ziegler Martin; and his two sons Neil, chief of neurosurgery UCLA and Douglas Martin, chemical engineer with Exxon Mobil ; daughters-in-law, Colleen and Lisa; and grandsons Clay, Neil Jr. and Nicholas; and granddaughter, Galina. His sister, Sybill McFadden of Tarpon Springs, Florida also survives Dr. Martin along with numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held Monday, May 19, 4:00 p.m. at the University of Texas Alumni Center, 2110 San Jacinto Blvd. The family welcomes all friends and colleagues of Dr. Martin. Parking is available at the parking garage east of the stadium.
