Miguel TREVINO Obituary

TREVINO Sr., Miguel "Mike"

1944-2014

Miguel (Mike) Trevino, Sr. of Austin, Texas passed away on August 4, 2014 from complications following a lung transplant. Mike was born on August 19, 1944. He grew up all over South Texas but considered Taft, Texas his hometown. He was preceded in death by his parents, Felix and Julia Trevino. He is survived by his mother-in-law, Luz Guajardo, who was like a mother to him as well.

Mike was lucky to find love at a young age and met Deborah Guajardo when he was 16 and she was 13. After a five year courtship, they married on October 30, 1965. Following their wedding, they made their home in Austin, Texas where he had moved to go to school. They were an example to many of enduring companionship, devotion and love. One of the tragedies of his death is that they will not have the opportunity to celebrate their 50th anniversary with their families.

Mike joined the US Post Office in 1965. During his career, he worked briefly as a mail handler and as a manager, but he truly enjoyed being out on the street, delivering mail on a route, visiting with customers and business owners. He retired as a letter carrier in 1999 after 34 years of service. His parents instilled a strong work ethic in him and he proudly passed this value on to his children.

Mike and Debbie had three children: daughters Benita (Philip Brady) and Elizabeth (Mark Porter) and one son, Miguel Trevino, Jr. (Amber). He considered his children his greatest accomplishment and took great pride in seeing them go to college, marry well and raise families of their own. His happiness as a parent was only surpassed by the joy he received as a grandparent. He was a doting grandfather to Alec Trevino, Jack Brady and Ryan Trevino. He was also recently blessed with a great grandchild, Aiden Trevino.

Mike loved all sports, especially the Longhorns, but his biggest love was baseball. As a boy and a young man, he was a player and coach, and when he grew older, he transitioned to softball. He played and acted as a manager for several men's softball teams and spent many a weekend traveling across the state at tournaments. Mike took pleasure in coaching his son's Little League baseball teams for more than 8 years at Manchaca Youth Optimist, but happily became spectator when his son moved onto high school and college baseball. Mike passed on his love of the sport to his son and was thrilled when Miguel, Jr. became a high school baseball coach. He rarely missed a game, and provided his son with advice (solicited or not) and support. He was his son's biggest fan.

Mike was a godly man, and his Catholic faith was strong. He and Debbie were longtime members of San Jose Church. He considered all his blessings gifts from God and found peace in His grace. He was godfather to more than 20 children because his friends and family knew he would provide a solid religious foundation for his godchildren. He went to mass every Sunday and then would stay to enjoy breakfast and fellowship afterward at the church hall. Even in the end, he would take comfort in prayer and his relationship with our Lord.

Mike was very social and had many, many friends all over Austin. He had so many "best" friends, you couldn't name just one. He and his friends shared a love of sports, but also music, a good practical joke, and, after retirement, golf. From Montopolis to Westlake, he could go into a store or a restaurant and run into someone he knew from softball, the Post Office, San Jose or youth sports. He considered his friends to be extended family.

Although he gave up smoking in the early 90s, the damage had been done. He was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis in 2009. He was accepted as a transplant patient and received a new lung in 2012. The operation was successful but he suffered many post-surgery complications. For two years, he fought a good fight but in the end, it became to much. The family would like to thank all his doctors and staff at Methodist Hospital and Kindred Hospital in Houston, Texas and Texas Neuro Rehab Hospital in Austin. We are especially grateful to Dr. Boysen, and his nurses Jim, Corey, Dusty at Texas Neuro Rehab who went above and beyond to ensure he was well taken care of and comfortable at the end.

Mike Trevino was big and cool, handsome and charming. He was also proud and stubborn and just a little bit vain. Because of his size, he was very intimidating but he was the sweetest man. He was a strict disciplinarian and held all who knew him to a high standard, but he was also your biggest supporter when you were down. He was a loving husband, generous father, dedicated employee, and a loyal friend and compadre. He will be missed each and every day by all who knew him.

Mike Trevino will lie in state on Thursday, August 7, 2014 at Mission Funeral Home Serenity Chapel on South 1st Street. He will be available to receive visitors who would like to pay their respects after 2:00 pm. Recitation of the Holy Rosary will take place at 7:00 pm on Thursday in the Chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am on Friday, August 8, 2014 at San Jose Catholic Church, with burial services immediately following at Onion Creek Memorial Park in Manchaca, Texas.

Our deepest condolences go out to the Trevino family at this time of sorrow. We first met Mike and his family in 2007. Our oldest son Abel Soriano attended Crockett High School where he joined the baseball program coached by Miguel Trevino. We remember Mike and Debbie were at all the games. Mike was there until he could no longer attend. Every time he arrived he was smiling and shaking our hands, happy to be there. May God Be with his family and heal their hearts. God bless him and may he rest in peace. From: Chris, Samantha, Abel, Josef and Kristina Soriano

Mike is my brother-in-law but he quickly became my big brother. He gave me my start in adulthood by opening up his home for me live while I started my career with AT&T. He provided sound advice , introduced me to all his friends and always included Sylvia and me in most functions. I always knew that he was there for me if I needed anything. I will miss him dearly and am proud to say that He is my family. RIP Brother.

Our Sincere Condolences to Debbie and the family. We still remember the great time we all had in San Diego, California during the Holiday Bowl and my father-in-law Tom remembers it well. He thought as we all do that Mike was a great guy having met him then for the first time. God bless you all and rest in peace Mike.
