Regine SCHUMAKER Obituary

SCHUMAKER, Regine

Regine Schumaker, 70, of Austin, TX died on Thursday, November 13, 2014 at her home after a sixteen month battle with Leukemia. She was born and raised in Paris, France and immigrated to the US in 1964.

Regine was born in Paris, France to Louis and Denise Renard. Regine was educated in France and immigrated to the US in 1964 to visit her brother Remi who was a graduate student at MIT. There she met her future husband, Norman Schumaker, in 1964 and they were married in 1966 in Michigan City, Indiana. They raised two successful sons, Philip and Matthew, in Warren, New Jersey where they lived for 30 years before moving to Austin to retire in 1998. While raising her children, she completed her Bachelor of Science, summa cum laude, and earned a Master's degree in French and in education at Douglas College of Rutgers University, in New Jersey. She maintained a lifelong interest in languages and linguistics.

Regine was an excellent cook and enjoyed displaying the sophistication of her native French cuisine to the delight of her friends and family at the dining room table. An avid gardener she loved the beauty and grace of roses and had a special garden just for her favorites. Regine was an active member of the Austin Newcomers where she made many lasting friendships and helped maintain a vibrant French conversation group. She also enjoyed the Alliance Francaise Austin where she continued to practice her French. She also served on the Board of Directors of the Foothills Home Owners Association for twelve years and she was President for six years. She also managed an office building in Westlake for Foretel Properties, LLP. She always stayed active.

Regine was preceded in death by her sister Jacqueline in France. She is survived by her husband Norman, their two sons, Philip in Austin and Matthew in North Carolina as well as two grandchildren, Dexter and Adelyn in North Carolina. Her brother, Remi, lives in New Jersey. She has a niece, Christine, and a nephew, Jean-Louis, still in France and a nephew, Regis, in Arkansas, a niece, Violette, in Ohio and another nephew, Henri, in New Jersey.

Working with Norman & Phil, I met Regine on many occasions. She was a lovely lady and always made you feel important and comfortable. She also made the best desserts. She will be missed. Sincerely, Jerry & Ray DeVreugd
