David Sander Obituary

David Christian Sander STATESVILLE David Christian Sander passed away Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013, after a 30-month battle with Glioblastoma Multi-forme, a form of brain cancer, at age 68. He was surrounded by his loving family in his last days at home. David was born March 27, 1944, in Ravenna, Ohio, to the late Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Nathaniel Sander. David grew up in Ravenna and then attended Kent State University and Ohio Northern, earning a degree in Pharmacy in 1967. He was a member of the Kappa Psi Fraternity. He began his pharmacy career in Kent, Ohio, and moved to Statesville, in 1976. He was a member of New Salem United Methodist Church. He owned and operated All-Star Sports on Broad St., from 1978 to 1992. He returned to pharmacy and moved to Lake Norman in 2000. A lifelong sailor and sportsman, he enjoyed sailing, windsurfing, water and snow skiing, basketball, golfing, fishing and camping. He was a devoted father to his three children and six grandchildren and spent much time at their activities and serving as the neighborhood "Tickle Monster." David was a fan of Ohio State and the Cleveland Browns football teams. Upon retirement at age 63, he spent summers fly fishing, hiking and camping in Colorado and winters sailing Biscayne Bay, in Florida. He traveled throughout his life with his family and friends to many national parks, windsurfing destinations and beyond. His favorite vistas include the Tetons and sunsets on the Outer Banks. David was well known by friends and family for his sense of humor and love of life. He will be missed beyond words. He is survived by his partner of 17 years, Susan G. Woods; daughter, Michelle Sander Dagenhart (Erik) and two children, Olivia and Sam Dagenhart, of Charlotte; son, David M. Sander and two children, Nathaniel and Hannah Kirke, of Wake Forest; daughter, Tami Sander Atkins (Tim) and two daughters, Vivian and Eliza, of Chapel Hill; sister, Bonnie and Jim Kusmits, of Canal Fulton, Ohio; and brother, William and Nancy San-der, of Cooper City, Fla. A Celebration of Life service will be held at New Salem United Methodist Church, in Statesville, Sunday, Jan. 27, at 2:30 p.m. The family will visit guests in the fellowship hall after the service. His ashes will be interred at a later date by the family. In lieu of flowers, please send memorial donations to Angels Among Us at http://dccc. convio.net/goto/dave. sander, SmileTrain.org, or New Salem UMC Fifth Street Ministries Fund.

We'll always have great memories of piling in to the All Star Sports van & going to the lake. Your dad had infinite patience when it came to teaching kids how to wind surf, and he pulled me skiing (while teasing me that I weighed as much as the boat) on gorgeous summer days. Remembering that Tickle Monster title brought huge tears to my eyes. He was SO fun, and my bet is that twinkle in his eye will live on through his six grandkids.
