Barbara Ellis Obituary

Barbara Doris Ellis, 74, passed away peacefully and in the presence of her family on Sept. 1, 2013, at Flagler Hospital in St. Augustine.

Barbara was born May 25, 1939, and was raised in Seaford N.Y. Barbara was predeceased by her parents, James and Shirley Bould and her siblings, James Bould, Clifford Bould and Alys (Pixie) Zabriskie. In February of 1957 she married Hubert James (Jimmy) Ellis in St. William the Abbott Catholic Church, Seaford, N.Y. She is survived by her former husband, Jimmy Ellis; their six children and their significant others: James and Donna Ellis, Kathleen and Michael Sielaff, Patricia and James McNulty, Kelli-Ann Ellis and Ronald Leone, Kerri-Ann and J. Hartley, Michael and Lauren Ellis; 11 grandchildren (Meghan Miller and Brendan Sielaff, Michael, Connor and Liam McNulty, Camryn, Collin, Ellis and Tatum Hartley, Trinity and Abbie Ellis); and four great-grandchildren (Tennyson, Maurade, Makenna and Maisie Miller).

The Ellis family moved from Seaford Long Island to St. Augustine in the summer of 1985. In 1987, Barbara and Jimmy Ellis purchased a pre-existing business at 36 Charlotte St. Over time, they branched out Palm Bay Republic to locations throughout St. Augustine. Barbara was also a well-known community figure who took part in the St. Augustine Vision Project to define a community based vision for the future of St. Augustine. She was seated in 2004 as a commissioner in the City of St. Augustine Beach where she resided. She was an active member of the Visitors and Convention Bureau and the Chamber of Commerce. During her term as the City of St. Augustine Beach commissioner, she was instrumental in helping to create and organize the St. Augustine Beach Blast Off, an annual New Year"s Eve event. She was also a member of St. Anastasia Catholic Church.

The viewing will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Craig Funeral Home. A funeral Mass will be at 9 a.m. Friday at St. Anastasia Catholic Church. A place for the gathering of family and friends will be announced following the Mass.

With the help of Council On Aging, the family was able to take care of Barbara at home for the last seven years. In lieu of flowers, send donations to: Council On Aging 180 Marine St., St. Augustine, FL 32084.

ahh Barbara...from the first moment I met Barbara...with that twinkle in her eyes, the joy in her voice and the radiant smile I knew immediately where her son, my student Michael got his wonderful personality. We chatted, she spoke of her family in such loving terms...it was an instant and immediate friendship. Though I didn't see her often as I would have liked to see her..after Michael graduated...when we would meet up some where..it was as if time has stopped...that the years had not escaped but rather were captured in an envelope and sealed with love and appreciation for each other, for life and for fun. She will be so missed by so many and that is a rich and lasting heritage. I last saw her on New Year's Eve at the very NYE Bash on St. Augustine Beach that she originated. We laughed, we talked and we hugged. She is in a better place ....kicking up her heels and having fun...I just know it. Love Carole Prior AKA MRS. J

Patricia, Kathleen, Cary, Kelly, Michael and Jimmy, and the Entire Ellis Family,
I knew of Barbara before I actually met her. My wife, Kelly, would come home from Gypsy Cab and tell tales of Barbara's generosity:
“Here's twenty dollars.”
“What's that for?”
“I played the slots for you, and you won twenty dollars.”
And then I met Barb. So often the genuine article doesn't live up to the billing
Not so in this case.
But she was no stranger to adversity. Tales of her losing her hair, beating cancer, over-coming a stroke, having two broken arms…not just one…were as mythic as her generosity.
We went on to become great friends. Two of the most significant events in my life involved Barbara.
First was going to St. Martin, a dream come true for me, with Ann and Greg. It was a trip that wouldn't have happened if it hadn't been for Barbara offering her timeshare to us. It was made just a little extra special because we weathered a direct hit by Hurricane Georges. (I think Barbara arranged that?) It was fantastic!
And the second was our wedding reception. Kelly, my Kelly, and I had a bit of a disagreement about what we both wanted. I really wanted it to be at Ripley's…Believe it or Not. But Barb had offered to have it at her house. She planned it, cooked, over saw the logistics…the whole enchilada. Are you kidding me???
I just didn't think it was done like that, little did I know… fortunately cooler heads prevailed. It was the icing on the cake to an event that changed my life
How does one ever say Thank-You enough to someone for being that kind and generous?
But Barbara was not done with us yet. We saw her go through trials that would have even tested Job. She came through it like a trooper with a smile on her face.
Through out the whole time I knew Barb she always asked about My Folks, and ‘How were they doing?'
It's cliché to say, “I'm the better for knowing her,” but it's true. Barbara's legacy is with her wonderful children and her beautiful grand children.
I'll take with me her fierce determination to love and give and fight, for your life, what you believe in and those you love but most of all, her wonderful lovely, lively, laugh.
Thanks for the Memories, Kid,
Love, sincerely,
Eric J
