Fred Harrison Smith of St. Augustine, Fla., passed away suddenly on Tuesday, April, 13, 2009, at Flagler Hospital. He and his beloved wife of 70 years, Lucille Lipe Smith, had lived in St. Augustine since 1977. A native of Asheville, N.C., he was born on Nov. 8, 1921, to Leonard Lewis Smith and Ella Marie Cox Smith. His brother, William Lewis Smith, passed away last year, and a sister, Helen Watson, also preceded him in death.
In addition to his loving wife, he is also survived by his daughters, Charlene Smith Sinclair, and her husband, Ronald J. Sinclair of Xenia, Ohio, and Debby Smith of St. Augustine; grandsons, Daniel Harrison Sinclair of Xenia, Ohio, and William Cyrus Proctor, of Raleigh, N.C.; and a brother, Ralph Leonard Smith of Spartanburg, S.C.
Mr. Smith was awarded the Bronze Star for service to his country in the United States Navy during World War II. After the war, he became a railway mail carrier and later a postal superintendent in Asheville for many years. He was of the Baptist faith. He felt great pleasure enjoying the birds in his yard, the beauty of the ocean and the Blue Ridge Mountains. Flowers are gratefully declined. Those wishing may make a donation in his honor to the St. Augustine Humane Society or the Special Olympics. Services will be private.
