Joan Hughes Obituary

Hughes, Joan Boecker Went home to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Saturday, March 7, 2015 at the age of 75, after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. She is survived by her husband, Jack A. Hughes; her sons and daughters-inlaw, William F. Hughes (Jennifer) and Stephen R. Hughes (Mary Anne); her daughter and son-in-law, Caroline Callie A. Cahill (Bill); her sister, Elizabeth Lyons of Charleston, SC; her brother, James Boecker (Gayle) of Lake St. Louis; and her nine grandchildren: Forrest, Hunter, Janie, Caroline, and Elizabeth Hughes; and Sarah, David, Andrew, and Lily Cahill. Joan had a deep love and abiding faith in the Lord, Jesus Christ, which was evident in the way she loved and cared for others. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Joan grew up in University City where she attended University City High. She graduated from Washington University with a degree in English Literature and went on to teach English and history at Ladue Junior High. She married Jack in 1962. Joan later served as the Area Children's Leader for Bible Study Fellowship International for many years, traveling Missouri and Illinois to meet with BSF groups. She was an avid bird enthusiast who enjoyed birding across the US often in Michigan where she vacationed as a child and summered every year for 63 years. Married to Jack for 53 years, he calls her an All-American Girl who loved people. She adored her family and was a devoted wife, loving mother, and fun grandmother. Joan was effervescent. There was an open, refreshing quality about her as she winsomely and enthusiastically welcomed you into her heart and home. Always upbeat, down-toearth, and forever loyal, Joan enjoyed lasting friendships with many groups, including U. City High classmates, her Kappa Alpha Theta sisters, fellow birders, friends from Michigan and the CSA, church friends, and neighbors. Joan had a beautiful way of putting others ahead of herself which was a tangible reflection of Christ's love for us. She will be greatly missed by all whose lives she touched. Services: A Memorial Service will be held at Central Presbyterian Church, 7700 Davis Drive, at Hanley Road, in Clayton on Friday March 13, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. A reception at the church will follow. Sally and Ann(Hopkins) were so sad to receive this news. We are just very grateful that we had an opportunity to visit with Joan during the weekend of our 57/75 class birthday party. Joan was her usual, wonderful self - the Joan Boecker Hughes that we had been best friends with since 7th grade. We will keep Joan and her family in our thoughts and prayers. Ann and Sally Hopkins

Jack:
My deepest condolences to you and your family. I have known Joan since grade school, and she truly was a remarkable person. Our UCHS yearbook had this quote by her name: "Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm."
But Joan's enthusiasm was unique because for some reason
it made others feel that way too. As long as I have known her, Joan transfered her cheerful ,upbeat, positive attitude to those she met. I called her a few months ago, and we discussed the illness. I had a close college friend with pancreatic cancer.
After our talk, one would never have known that she was sick. She had such a beautiful way of putting others before herself. She was truly an Angel all her life.

She will be missed by her friends from the class of 1957 University City High School.
