Kathleen Melissa Boren

Boren, Kathleen Melissa 63, of Crainville, Ill., died Wednesday, September 5, 2012, at the Rehab and Care Center of Jackson County in Murphysboro, Ill. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, September 7, 2012 at Riggin-Pillatsch & Burke Funeral Home in Carterville, Ill., with Fr. Keith Rodrick officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Carterville, Ill.. Visitation will be held from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m., Friday at the funeral home. Melissa, as she was known, was born October 13, 1948, in Aurora, Ill. to Raymond P. and Margaret H. (Huse) Boren. The family moved to St. Louis where they lived until Melissa was 7. Upon her mother's death, they returned to Crainville, Ill. When her father remarried they then moved to Norman, Oklahoma. After that marriage ended, Ray and Melissa returned once again to Crainville, Ill. She is survived by several cousins and many friends here in southern Illinois and in the St. Louis area. Melissa was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Dr. Barbara Jo Shelton. She was a graduate of Carterville grade and high schools. Melissa also graduated from S.I.U. Carbondale in 1966. After graduation, Melissa returned to St. Louis where she taught in the city of St. Louis public schools for thirty-two years. During her teaching career she helped to establish the Visual and Performing Arts Magnet High School where she served as the Athletic Director. As the Athletic Director, she established a well known gymnastic program for both male and female students. When she retired from teaching, she returned to Crainville, Ill. and enjoyed gardening, visiting the Library and spending time with friends.
