Watkins, Nancy Fergus McIver
Nancy Fergus McIver Watkins, a longtime St. Louisan, died peacefully at her home in Clayton, Mo., on July 24, 2022, surrounded by family. She was 92.
She spent her life enjoying her many blessings and making sure her family knew how much she loved them. Her unfailingly sweet, gentle demeanor was complemented by her grace and bright smile.
Nancy was born on February 2, 1930, in Chappaqua, New York, to James and Doris McIver. An only child, she believed strongly in commitment to family and early on knew she wanted a big family.
She attended Pembroke College in Brown University in Providence, RI, where she got a degree in Art and met classmate Albert Giolito Watkins. After they married, in 1952, Al went on to work in the magazine business.
Nancy was a wonderful cook and contributed throughout her life to various causes, including as a volunteer teacher.
Though they moved often, they spent more than two-thirds of their 65 years of marriage in St. Louis. Al died in 2017.
Nancy is survived by her children, James McIver (Alberta Friscia), Thomas Giolito, and John Francis Fergus (Kim Anderson) Watkins, all of New York; Albert Shawe and Nancy Maria Watkins, both of Saint Louis; by her grandchildren, Albert James (Jessica Friscia), Alexandra Shannon, Shawe McIver, Ainsley June, Greyson Kelley, Rowan Lucien Watkins, and by her great-grandson, Nathaniel Hugo Friscia Watkins.
