Jean L. Henderson, Art Teacher, lifelong Syracuse resident. Born in Syracuse in 1917, Miss Henderson attended Bellevue Junior High School and Central High School. She studied Fine Arts at Syracuse University and received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1940, completing her Masters of Fine Arts degree in 1946, also at Syracuse University. She began her career as an Art Teacher in Whitney Point and Baldwinsville before joining Syracuse City Schools, where she taught at Theodore Roosevelt Junior High School, Clary Junior High School, and Corcoran High School until she retired in 1977. In her spare time, she painted in watercolor, often scenes of Syracuse, Cape Cod, and the Outer Banks of North Carolina. She enjoyed being a member of the "Daubers" art society. In 2007, she moved to the Nottingham Retirement Community in Jamesville. Miss Henderson died at St. Camillus Health Center under hospice care after an illness with pneumonia.
A longtime member of Plymouth Congregational Church, where her parents were among the early members, Miss Henderson was a member of the Deacon's Board, Church choir, the Alden-Mayflower circle of women's fellowship, and served as church clerk and church historian. For many years she volunteered through the Onondaga Braillists' typing books in braille for blind students.
Miss Henderson is survived by her brother, Nelson Henderson of Chapel Hill, North Carolina; nieces, Susan Henderson of Morrisville, North Carolina, and Jane Brown of Boone, North Carolina, and a nephew, Alex Henderson of San Carlos, California.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, June 27, at 9 a.m. at Plymouth Congregational Church in Syracuse.

Jean loved to read and discuss books. Many pieces of her art lined the walls of her apartment. I will miss her and our many conversations. She was always kind and caring to me. How I enjoyed the many picnics and get-togethers with her and her sister, Mary. Jean and Mary and my Dad, John Sutton, were first cousins. She will very much be missed.

Miss Henderson was my art teacher at Corcoran High School. She was one of kindest, most patient teachers I had.

My memories of Jean Henderson is that of a kind, encouraging and gentle teacher. I am not artistically gifted, but due to her reputation from classmates who were artistic I took an art course with her my senior year at Corcoran. She left me with the fondest memories. She is an example of what we, who are teachers, strive to be.
