Charles Kline Obituary

Charles Irvin Kline

December 6, 1926 - May 24, 2024

Charles Irvin Kline passed away peacefully in the presence of his family on May 24, 2024. He was born in Youngstown, Ohio, to Etta (of Pennsylvania) and Fallon Kline (of Ohio) on December 6, 1926. He had an older sister, Anne. As a teenager, his family moved to California, where he attended Hollywood High School. The day before his 18th birthday, he enlisted in the Navy and served in World War II.

After the war, Chuck "Arms" Kline became one of the early bodybuilders in Los Angeles. He worked as a draftsman and eventually as a civil engineer, designing many of the waterways of L.A. County. During this time, he met the love of his life, Geraldine (Jerri) Wanek, at Bob's Big Boy, where she was the head carhop. They moved to Solvang in 1978 and enjoyed 60 beautiful years together in marriage.

Chuck loved building hot rods with friends and even raced at Bonneville in his youth. He had been a member of the LA Roadsters, the Viking Club, and American Legion organizations. While in Santa Ynez, he helped design the borders for the incorporation of Buellton and most notably opposed the inclusion of a bridge over the river, (which frequently washed away and needed rebuilding at considerable expense). Santa Barbara did not like that much, but dad loved 'fighting city hall' and won.

Charles also had a wonderful sense of humor. Every "What's up, Chuck?" was met with "Don't say upchuck!" and a wry smile. His quick wit kept everyone laughing. He was a strong, wonderful man who enjoyed a happy 97 years on this planet. He will be dearly missed by his three sons: Korey, Kelly, and Kris; six grandchildren: Nicholas, Matthew, Harlow, Andrew, Grant, and Fallon; and the many friends he made throughout his life.
