Sarah McMullen Obituary

Sarah Evelyn McMullen

Jesus Christ, Our Lord and Savior, wrapped his arms around Sarah Evelyn McMullen on February 18, 2014, and took her home to spend eternity with him. Evelyn was born in Suwannee County, Florida, and spent the majority of her precious life there.

She entered this world to loving parents, James and Mildred Hatcher, in 1932. Evelyn loved singing Gospel Hymns. One of her fondest memories as a teenager was singing with her sister, Bobbie, at Pine Level Baptist Church in Dowling Park, Florida. She met her future husband, Rufus Avon McMullen, while living with her Aunt Fanny and Uncle Drew Holmes near Dowling Park. They were married in Mayo, Florida, in 1949, by Reverend R. W. Calhoun. Their happy union of 56 years was interrupted by Avon's passing in May, 2006. Now, they are together again in the Lord's house.

Evelyn is remembered as a wonderful loving mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She loved her home in Manor Manner Subdivision in Live Oak, Florida, but followed her husband to his dream, a farm in 1972. Her occupations spanned from working at Suwannee Laundry with the Phillips family as a seamstress, making wedding and anniversary cakes for people she knew and loved, a poll worker for the Suwannee County Supervisor of Election, to raising crops and livestock on their farm. She enjoyed gardening keeping her yard immaculate, and raking leaves while uprooting all the grass in her yard to keep the leaves off the ground. The Live Oak tree she burned the leaves under still has the char marks to this very day. She was an active member of Philadelphia Baptist Church in McAlpin, Florida, until her illness took her away from her cherished home in 2012.

Evelyn is survived by their children, Edith (Bob) Griner, Rufus, Jr. (Jenean), David (Robin), Richard, Bonita (Mario) Hernandez, and Daniel, a brother, Andrew, 9 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, several half brothers and sisters, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held on Friday, February 21, 2014, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Daniels Funeral Home, 1126 Ohio Avenue North, Live Oak, Florida. Funeral Services will be held at Philadelphia Baptist Church, 15824 169th Road, McAlpin, Florida, on Saturday, February 22, 2014 at 11 am with Brother Leroy Dobbs officiating.

The family requests that flowers be sent to Daniels Funeral Home or if you prefer, donations may be made to the Big Bend Hospice of Tallahassee, 1723 Mahan Center Blvd, Tallahassee, FL 32308, (850) 878-5310 or (800) 772-5862, or Philadelphia Baptist Church.

A heart felt gratitude goes out to the care givers who provided tender loving care and mercy to our mother during her final days. God bless you for your ability to care for the individuals you work with and show compassion for the family who struggles to accept the inevitable.
