John McEuen Obituary

John Michael "Mike" McEuen, 83, born in Joliet, Illinois, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Friday, November 11, 2022. He is preceded in death by his parents Walter and Genevieve McEuen. Mike is survived by Sally McEuen, his loving wife of 57 years, four children and their spouses, and six grandchildren: Michael and Joy McEuen and their children Madelin and Jacob McEuen, Mark McEuen and Carlos De Paz, Melinda and Ryan Vaughan and their children Carter, Isabelle, and Ethan Vaughan, and Marna and Chris Bentley and their child Cade Bentley. Mike received bachelor's and master's degrees from University of Detroit and a PhD from University of Michigan. He worked for Ethyl and Albemarle corporations in Detroit, Michigan and Baton Rouge, Louisiana for 30 years. In 2010, he and Sally retired to Charlottesville, Virginia to be closer to their children and grandchildren. Mike was an active and involved father, coaching his children's sports teams and serving as a Scout Leader for 15 years. He was a faithful member of Broadmoor Methodist Church in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and active in the Saints Alive church choir and Sunday school group. He coordinated relief efforts at church after Hurricane Katrina. In Charlottesville, he sang in the Senior Center choir. Mike will be remembered for his sense of humor, kind heart, and gentle disposition and the way he literally whistled when he walked. He lovingly took care of his mother and her sister in their late years. His kids fondly remember family trips piled into the station wagon to visit Sally's family in Michigan and going to the beach. His grandkids had fun with him building Legos and flying toy airplanes. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, November 20 at 2:00 at the First United Methodist Church in Charlottesville, Virginia. The family encourages donations to the Alzheimer's Association in lieu of sending flowers.

To Mike's family and friends,
On behalf of The (Senior) Center family, our condolences. As noted, Mike was an active volunteer and sang in our chorus. His wit and ready smile and eagerness to serve and help others was always an inspiration. I'm sorry that I cannot attend his memorial on Sunday due to a family commitment.
