Thomas Montgomery Obituary

Thomas Allan Montgomery, Jr., known to his loved ones as Tom, passed away peacefully on October 15, 2023, in Augusta, Georgia, at the age of 89. He was surrounded by his loved ones, who lifted up hymns and prayers of thankfulness as he finished his race well. He was born on May 8, 1934, in Millen, Georgia. He married his childhood sweetheart, Anne Fulford Montgomery on February 4, 1956; they spent fifty wonderful years together. After graduating high school, he served as a member of the United States Navy, where his sense of service and chivalry were unmatched. As a follower of Jesus, he embodied what it meant to live a life defined by serving others through kindness, compassion, and dedication.

Tom spent many years as an educator at Memorial Day School in Savannah. Later he moved to the Bryan County School District where he served the students and families as both teacher and principal. He had a keen mind. During a season when most are planning retirement, Tom achieved two master's degrees after the age of 50. He loved doing the New York Times crossword puzzles in ink, traveling in his RV, and cheering on his alma mater, Georgia Southern, and his adopted team, Auburn, in football. In addition, he was a gifted writer and had begun an autobiography.

Tom's impact reached far beyond the classroom. He was a gentle soul who treated everyone with kindness and respect, listened without judgement, and had a deep capacity for empathy. He was a true gentleman. Even in his later years, when he required assistance to walk, he continued to open doors for ladies and refused to sit until the last female in the party was seated. He offered a word of kindness to everyone he encountered. His genuine displays of chivalry and meaningful conversation left a lasting impression on all who knew him.

Tom was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Anne Fulford Montgomery, and his grandson, Robert Montgomery Player. He was a beloved Daddy to his two daughters, Beth Powell (John) of Martinez, Georgia, and Leah Player (Bryan) of Shelby, North Carolina. He was a cherished PaPa to his three granddaughters, Sarah Beth Zeigler, Emily Powell, and Elizabeth "Ellie" Player, as well as his two grandsons, John Thomas Powell, and Sam Player, and his four great-grandchildren.

A celebration of Tom's remarkable life will be held on Friday, October 27, at 11:00 am at Thrive at Augusta, located at 313 Fury's Ferry Road, Martinez, GA. Friends, family, and all whose lives were touched by Tom are invited to attend this special gathering. A graveside service will take place on Saturday, October 28, at 11:00am at Old Canoochee Cemetery in Twin City, GA.

If so desired, memorial contributions may be made to Focus on the Family, 8605 Explorer Drive, Colorado Springs, CO 80920.

I am so sorry to hear about Tom. I knew Anne from working in Chatham Co and got to know Tom as we carpooled to Richmond Hill High several years ago. He was a wonderful friend. You were blessed to have such special parents and grandparents in your lives. Prayers for the family.
