Aquilino Vazquez Obituary
Aquilino Zarazúa Vázquez, 91, of Carmel Valley, died peacefully Saturday, Sept. 12, 2009, at his home in Carmel Valley.
Aquilino was born Jan. 4, 1918, in Santa Catarina, Guanajuato, Mexico, to Quintíl Zarazúa Lugo and María Guadalupe Vázquez Cárdenas. He came to the U.S. in 1945 under a Bracero or guest worker program and for several years worked in the agricultural fields of the Salinas Valley. Later he worked on the Odello Ranch in Carmel and eventually made his home on the former Hank Ketchum Ranch in Carmel Valley where along with his beloved wife Ampelia De León, he raised his three daughters. His purpose in coming to the U.S. was to work hard, help others and make certain his daughters received a solid education; all three daughters earned a college degree.
Aquilino was a loving and gentle, soft spoken man who would offer a kind smile to everyone he encountered. He was a masterful story teller and his memories of his early years growing up in Mexico were vivid and rewarding. His love of family, horses and hearty Mexican food were undeniable and his sense of compassion, commitment and cultural pride nurtured many family members and friends. Aquilino will be eternally grateful to the caregivers who so kindly provided comfort and companionship to him during many difficult times; to the wonderful people of the Monterey Peninsula and the Salinas Valley who befriended him; and to the United States for giving this hard working immigrant an opportunity to realize his dreams.
Survivors: He is survived by his wife, Ampelia; his daughters, Albertina (Rafael Padilla), Blanca and Gladys; his grandchildren, Rafael Padilla Jr. and Hugo Padilla; and his siblings, Eudocia, Benjamín, José and Delfina.
He is predeceased by his brother, Cipriano Zarazúa.
Memorial Mass: 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 18, at his home in Carmel Valley (285 Esquiline Road); Bishop Richard García shall officiate the Mass.
Burial service: Shall be performed immediately following at San Carlos Cemetery, 792 Fremont St. in Monterey.
Memorials: Donations may be made to the Parkinson's Institute and the family may be contacted by email at [email protected] or via U.S. mail at P.O. Box 515, Carmel Valley, Calif. 93924.
Arrangements: Paul Mortuary, 390 Lighthouse Ave., Pacific Grove.

Ampelia, Betty, Blanca & Gladys,
Please accept my deepest sympthy regarding your beloved husband's/dad's passing. He lived a good, long, happy life and he is now HOME and at rest with the Angels. He is and will always be well-remembered by me because he was always so kind and warm to me as a child. I loved his hand shake, no one I have known since him has ever given me sure sincere, warm and strong handshakes as he did. :) Take care all of you and I will keep you all in my prayers.
