Anna Sweeney Obituary

Chester - Anna Shubik Sweeney died at home in Chester, at age 69, Sunday, Sept. 26, 2021. She was a beloved wife, mother and grandmother; a devoted friend to many; and an indelible part of the town of Chester.

Anna was born April 18, 1952, in Chicago, to Virginia and Dr. Philippe Shubik, the second of their four children. Of her happy childhood in Glencoe, Illinois, she would remember the care of her loving and gregarious mother and summers spent at the cottage her parents built on Jack Lake in Ontario. In June of 1963, Anna and her father survived a house fire that claimed the lives of her mother and siblings. From this tragedy, Anna gained the lifelong trait of resilience. She often repeated the maxim, "life goes on," even after the most terrible events.

Anna left the midwest in 1970, to attend Smith College. At Smith, she earned a bachelor's degree in art history and a master's degree in education. She moved to New York City, where she first worked as a paralegal and then attended law school at Rutgers. At age 30, Anna met Paul Sweeney through mutual friends. They eloped five months later and remained married for almost 39 years, welcoming son Ben in 1985, and twins, Virginia and Sam, two years later.

Anna had a contagious and often absurd sense of humor and an unquenchable thirst for adventure. She was the beating heart of her very close family, speaking with each of her children every day about things large and small. She will be missed beyond measure.

Anna is predeceased by her parents; brother Roger; sisters, Jennifer and Carlotta; aunts, Irene Shubik and Julie Shubik; and uncle Martin Shubik. She is survived by her husband Paul; son Benjamin (wife Amy Todd and daughter Josephine Sweeney); daughter Virginia (husband Bartram Nason and daughter Magnolia Nason Sweeney); son Samuel; stepmother Valerie Shubik; stepsiblings, Kathryn Diemer and Peter Shubik; and cousin Claire Shubik-Richards (husband Seth Richards-Shubik and children Elliott and Leopold).

So very sorry hearing of Anna´s passing. I loved Anna´s humor and wit. Many times at board meetings and around town she would bring a smile to my face. She loved her kids. Devoted. Paul and kids, my sincere condolences.

I haven't seen Anna since her Smith years but have kept up with her through my stepsister, Betsy Duerr. Anna was one of the warmest and funniest people I've known and I'm so sorry for her loss. Sending blessings to Paul and her children and grands.

I had the pleasure of meeting Anna at the boat parade a few years back. She always loved hosting and organizing that event. We recently talked about ways we could improve communication amongst lakers.

The lake won´t be the same without her.

My thoughts and prayers are with Anna´s family and friends.

We are fellow Jack Lakers and are shocked and saddened by the passing of Anna. Anna and I had sent a few massages back and forth this summer and I looked forward to seeing her at the lake events next summer. We extend our deepest sympathy to Paul and her entire family.

Paul and family, we feel honored to have known Anna for the brief period we did on Mason´s Island. Her joie de vivre was so apparent and I know she leaves a void in everyone´s lives who knew her. Please know we are thinking of you daily.

We are so saddened by the news of Anna's passing. She was always upbeat and full of fun "kookie" moments. Sending our condolences to the Sweeney and Shubik families.

I met Anna at Jack Lake when l would swim by her dock. She was warm, helpful and welcoming to the new neighbours. I see how missed she will be by her family and friends and my heart goes out to them through their sorrow. I will not forget the last time l saw her kayaking on the lake.
