Ernest Sternberg Obituary

Colchester - Ernest William Sternberg III, 54, of Colchester, died in his sleep Tuesday morning, Aug. 30, 2005, at the Palliative Care Center at Hartford Hospital. This marks the end of an eighteen month battle with cancer.

Ernie was a first vice-president of Advest, Inc. in Hartford, having worked for the firm for 27 of the last 30 years. He was recognized as Advest's 2004 Employee of the Year and recipient of the John A. King Award for Outstanding Service. He was known throughout Advest as the person to go to for answers when all other sources failed. Ernie performed in rock bands in the 60's and 70's, including Nemisis and The Enemies of Silence, playing bass guitar. He was a traveler, motorcyclist, and athlete. In his spare time he was an avid reader, practiced the martial arts of Aikido and Modern Arnis, played volleyball, and recently became active in the Live Action Role Playing community. Notable in his travels was a motorcycle trip from Hartford north to Canada, west to the Pacific, south to the Los Angeles, then back to Hartford. He left for the trip during summer 1978, returning just before Christmas. It was a motorcycle that took him across the country once again when he and his wife-to-be traveled to Seattle and turned a basement into a home for a year.

On May 9, 1951, Ernie was born at the same hospital where he died. Growing up in West Hartford, he graduated from Hall High School in 1969, lettering in football, wrestling, and track. At 155 pounds, he was a starting offensive lineman, and according to a teammate, "he got the job done." Gladly getting the job done was something he was counted on to do throughout his life. He was repeatedly elected by classmates to represent them in student government and was active in many other extracurricular activities.

He was a National Merit Scholar Finalist, and was voted "Most Likely to Succeed" by his peers. Ernie attended Duke University, graduating in 1974 with a bachelor of science degree in anthropology and political science. That summer, he hitchhiked alone from North Carolina to a friend's wedding in the Colorado Rockies. He walked most of the last several miles to a remote home and immediately spent several hours helping contain a small forest fire. Having missed the previous two nights' sleep, he then took a nap.

On Aug. 15, 1980, Ernie married Janis Ann Lynch, and celebrated their second wedding anniversary by having their first child, a son named Graham. True to family form, he was a day late. By the time their daughter, Whitney, was born, both Jan and Ernie had sidecars on their motorcycles. Jan died on May 15, 1998, also from cancer.

A friend who shared Ernie's last night at the hospital reports that his subtle grace lasted to the end. That same friend's brother called the nursing station to inquire about Ernie's condition Tuesday morning, not knowing that he had just passed and found that the member of the staff answering the phone could do little more than burst into tears. Even though he had known them for only eight days, he still managed to touch the lives of the nursing staff in a way that few can.

Ernie is survived by his two beloved children, Graham and Whitney, both of Colchester; his mother, Margaret (Joseph) DeSanzo of West Hartford; a sister, Ruthann (Wayne) Bouchard of Union; three brothers, Raymond (Mary) Sternberg of Dania, Fla.; Ken (Laura) Sternberg of Manchester, and John E. Sternberg of West Hartford; his father-in-law, Jack Lynch of Wallingford; his wife's siblings, Kathy (Bruce) Lawson of East Hampton and Jack (Laurie) Lynch of Glastonbury; dear friends, James Wagner of Columbus, Ohio, Robert Barrows of Peterboro, N.H., David (Rita) Armstrong of Los Angeles, Calif., Paul (Peggy) Seely of Old Saybrook, not to mention numerous extended family members and a multitude of friends.

Whether you knew him as Ernest, Ernie, Ern, or Ernesto, friends are encouraged to call Tuesday, Sept. 6, beginning at 2 p.m. at the Aurora-McCarthy Funeral Home, 167 Old Hartford Road, Colchester, before a 5 p.m. memorial service. A gathering in honor of Ernie will take place at the Colchester Fish and Game Club, from 6 until 9 p.m. that night on Old Town Road, off of Rte. 85 North, in Colchester. Burial will be a family affair at Fairview Cemetery, West Hartford.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Hartford Hospital Palliative Care Center, PO Box 5037, Hartford CT 06102 or to the Hole in the Wall Gang Fund, 555 Long Wharf Drive, Dept. W, New Haven CT 06511.

Ernie,

I remember the cups of coffee and the conversations we used to have when I would come to your downtown office to say hi. Thanks for always being there to listen and inspire me.

I am glad for the time we had to spend together in January when I came to visit with John in the hospital.

I will also never forget the phone conversations we had that last week you were in the hospital.

But most of all, I will remember your example, your steadfastness, your perseverance. You ran the race and finished it well. You showed me that when you start something you need to stick with it. Thanks for being a great example, not only to me but to your children. You were there, to the end, for Whitney and Graham and I know they will never forget.

Thanks for being a great brother.

I'll miss you!

Well done, good and faithful servant.

Love, your brother always,

Ray

Dear Graham and Whitney,

I just wanted to let you know that I am thinking of you both. I'm sorry to see such a great father pass away. He was truly the "amazing Ernesto" and it was a pleasure to have known him. I always knew I could count on seeing him at a band concert, waiting to congratulate everyone. He was filled with a charm and certain charisma that you don't see in many people these days. I will never forget that all too knowing sparkle in his eye. Don't forget that sparkle, for it will get you through these difficult times.

I had the pleasure of working with Ernie for many years at Advest. Simply put, he made it a better place to work. Whether he was helping solve a work related problem,or discussing the previous night's UCONN game, he always had the time. Ernie had the unique ability to relate to people on ALL levels. His positive energy was infectious and he carried the qualities that we all should aspire to possess.

Truly a remarkable person!

Ernesto was the Advest answer man. He will be sorely missed, not just for his infinite knowledege of everything, but rather his gentle ease with those seeking answers. Also, tho, he was considered "upper management", Ernie always sought out the celebrations of those who worked "under" him. Our loss is a great loss to those who knew & loved him. He is irreplaceable.

Now the battle day is past;

Now upon the farther shore

Lands the voyager at last."

Have a safe ride home.

I'll miss you & love you always,

I was fortunate to work with Ernie for 27 years at Advest. For many of those years our offices were side by side which afforded me one of the greatest resources in the firm to draw on for answers to just about any question concerning any area of our Operations Department. Ernie was always one of the most accessable and knowledgeable people in the firm. It is a tragedy that he had to leave us so soon and I will miss his smile and warm prsonality dearly. My thoughts and prayers go out to Graham, Whitney and all of his family and friends - he was a great friend and inspiration to all who knew him.

Graham and Whitney,

Even though we never had the pleasure of meeting I knew your dad through my brother Tim. He and your dad were members of the band "Nemesis" together.

I remember him fondly and I know that he will be making music where ever he might be.

My thougths and prayers are with both of you and your family.

Ernest - What a gem! One of the kindest, considerate, helpful gentleman I had the priviledge of working with at Advest.

Ernie was a wonderful student and friend, and he will be terribly missed by his karate family.

Ernie always came into our school with a positive attitude and a kind word to say to everyone and he always had a positive outlook no matter what obstacles he may have been facing.

We are better for having had Ernie touch our lives.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Ernie's family during this difficult time.

Dear Graham and Whitney, I was so saddened to read that Ernie passed away. The obit captured his character so well.

Although I left Advest in 1991, I have fond memories of your Dad. Ernie trained me in the back office management at Advest by teaching me to answer two seemingly easy questions: Where's the stock? and, Where's the money? Of course, the stock and/or the money could be anywhere in America! He was a great teacher. Ernie also had a knack of being the brightest guy in the room without trying.

My favorite Ernie story - 1985 NCAA basketball tournament. Georgetown is favored to win by everyone and anyone who ever picked a basketball game. Ernie picks Villanova to win it all. The only person at Advest to pick any team other than Georgetown was Ernie. Everyone laughs at him...some of the crankier people at Advest even mock him. Turns out to be the biggest upset in modern NCAA history with Villanova winning!

Although you will miss him and he left us too soon, please know that he touched many people, made us laugh and taught us well - one of the best people I've ever met.

My condolences to you and your family. Deidra Ierardi

To the Sternberg Family,

My thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time.

Ernie was a wonderful boss and friend through my years at Advest. I could go to him at any time and know I would never be turned away from his office and that I would always leave with the answer I was looking for. He truly was a remarkable man.

With my deepest sympathies,

Ernie-You were what every person should be, kind, considerate, honest. You always had a smile and words to make the hardest of times go away with a smile. As our neighbor we will miss that green jeep backing out of the driveway and our four year old son running to the window to say" There's Ernie!" and that wonderful smile followed with a wave. You touched lives even if you didnt know it. My family will miss you. Make heaven a musical place for today earth lost a gift, heaven received one.
