George Ouellette Obituary

Noank - George S. Ouellette, 63, of Noank, died unexpectedly Oct. 22, 2022. He was the son of the late George J. Ouellette and the late Sally (Krowchun) Ouellette, formerly of Chelmsford, Mass.

After graduating from Chelmsford High School, George attended Boston University and NYU Medical School. After completing his internship, residency and fellowship at Yale New Haven Hospital, George joined Coastal Digestive Care Center in New London, where he practiced gastroenterology for more than thirty years. George was beloved by his colleagues and adored by his patients, known as much for his compassion and caring as his skills as a gifted physician.

Although George accomplished many things in his life, none was more important to him than raising his daughter Hope with his longtime partner Sandi. George was a natural at parenting. Whether it was planning special father-daughter weekends in Boston, cooking and baking together, attending recitals and school events or just hanging out together, George adored every minute he spent with Hope. They shared a goofy sense of humor and a love of memes and practical jokes. George could not have been more proud of the young woman Hope had become.

George loved fishing and golfing. An Arnold Palmer fan, he was a regular at the Lawrence + Memorial Golf Tournament on Fishers Island, and a founding member of the Stonington Country Club. Always the gracious host, George enjoyed opening his home to family and friends, making entertaining seem effortless and every guest feel welcome. George was unfailingly generous, a loyal and devoted friend who treated every friendship as if it were his most important one.

In addition to his daughter Hope and his partner Sandi Wallace, both of Noank, George is survived by his sister Susan Ouellette of Woodstock, Md., his sister Linda Ouellette of Shrewsbury, Mass., and his sister Karen Ouellette of Tewksbury, Mass.; his brother-in-law Mitchell Toloczko of Hopkinton, Mass.; and his godson Alexander Toloczko of Shrewsbury, Mass.

His family will receive relatives and friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1, at the Mystic Funeral Home located on Route 1 in Mystic. Please note: The GPS address for the funeral home is 51 Williams Avenue, Mystic. A service for George will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 2, at the funeral home. Burial will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, George's legacy can be honored with donations to Yale Digestive Diseases Fellowship Fund, Yale Section of Digestive Diseases, P.O. Box 208019, New Haven, CT 06250-8019.

George was a senior and I was in my second year at BU and were apartment mates. I learned of his passing more than a year ago and of thought of those wonderful times. George was the smartest person I ever knew and worked hard to be the best of 82. We played intermural softball on Nickerson field and had a filthy apartment. We stopped whatever were doing on Tuesday at 10 pm and would watch "Soap" religiously. He would laugh out load throughout the half hour. Hope try watching the show it´s still funny. I am happy he turned out to be such a great doctor and he was a good cook when he was twenty one.Sorry for your lose, you had a great dad and partner!

I am saddened to find out that my long lost cousin, George Ouellette, has passed. I have not seen him since we were kids. As I was looking for my father's side of the family today, I saw this. I remember what a good friend his father was with my father (brothers). I wish I had gotten to know him as an adult.

Dear Sandi, Hope, & the entire circle of George´s family `n´ friends,

I am in total shock. George has been my GI guy since I turned 55; am knockin´ on 70´s door now...THANKS TO HIM! GEORGE IS MY HERO!!! On OCT 7, 2013, I "visited" George; on OCT 9, he called me into his office, and said quite simply, "Ray...it´s cancer...here´s what we´re gonna do!" The obit mentions he made every friend feel like his only and best; that´s because he got so much practice from his practice. He diagrammed my situation on the exam table paper, said here´s what it is and how we need to address it. Recommended a surgeon, Dave Reisfeld (cuz he had little hands...and expertise, of course...but hand-assist surgery), and told me if he didn´t get to me by Friday, because George was goin´ outta town that weekend, let him know and he would contact him personally. Turns out, as I was leavin´ and walkin´ to my truck, I got a call from Dr. Reisfeld´s office arranging a consult, which went so well that Dave was able to perform a right hemicolectomy, removing half my colon and stuff, and putting´ the rest back together, on OCT 29, so good that I was fully functional AND declared cancer free NOV 6...yes...2013!!! And, yes, Dave´s my hero, too...he put out the fire, but George rang the alarm!!! And that meant more regular visits, but I eagerly looked forward to each...The Prep, which Irish comic, Billy Connolly describes quite accurately, aside...just to visit with George again! And one final thing, mentionin´ comic, I´ve me own punchline here as well, because, now, thanks to them both, I´m an Engineering Technical Editor with his very own semicolon!!! What was George Ouellette like?!? Like what you´ve just read! He was a good-feelin´ dispenser who reveled in victory...success...right along with ya! Bet God´s tickled to have him around!
Still, having lost both parents myself, I fully understand the hole left behind by a partner, dad, granddad, `n´ friend, regardless forewarning; pray this helps some wee bit...to allow...enable... the grief! Grief that will come...indulge it...it is necessary, but it is, also, a measure of the impact this lost love had on your life...a yardstick against which that love can be measured! So truly sorry to hear about George...TRULY. Definitely keepin´ y´all in my prayers that Christ hold you close in this trying time!
When my mother died, even after a years-long battle with cancer, I was shattered by the loss...inconsolable... she was my mentor! BUT, "If your faith assures you she's in heaven, then what are the tears all about?!?" I hold eternity with God a precious, cherished, and hard-won prize...but...in the interim, the answer lies below.

SELFISH TEARS
(I EULOGIZE MY BELOVED MOTHER - MARCH, 1989)

Today we cry...must admit they're selfish tears.
You see...our faith assures your journey's done.
But it's not for you we mourn, at all, my dear;
It's for those of us you've left behind...alone!!!

We share your joy...share your happiness at rest,
Your painful fears now for forever stilled.
You've fought the good fight, passed the final test,
But you've left behind a hole that can't be filled!!!

So, until we each rejoin you some someday,
And, while your memory buoys us through those years,
We'll miss you...but continue on our way,
And, from time to time, we'll cry our selfish tears!!!

Ray Hamilton ~*~ March 19, 1989
My sincerest condolences...fondest prayers,

We will always cherish the memories of our Wednesday night dinners, Father Bill nights, and the friendship we enjoyed. Much love to Sandi and Hope and our hope for eternal peace George.

I just heard of Dr. Ouellette's passing from my PCP at my annual physical - I was deeply saddened. He was my physician for a couple of issues and his caring demeanor shone through in all aspects.
On my very first visit, while waiting to be sedated for a procedure, he put me at ease by recalling his relations with my uncle (a fixture in Noank), and his "adoption" of my uncle's dog. The man was a class act!

Dr. Ouellette was my doctor and a wonderful person. He made such a difference in my life when he told me " there´s definitely a reason you can´t swallow pills so don´t let anyone make fun of you". It was a very validating statement. He went out of his way, was truly caring and so loved his family. He was a truly example for many healthcare workers. May his great love for life, family, friends and his patients guide him towards rest and surround his family.

I am so sorry to hear of Dr Oullette´s passing. He was my GI doctor and always so wonderful. He would go out of his way to answer every question and give me his personal cell number in case I had other questions. He, personally, would always get back to me later in the day to field those questions. What a guy! Dr Ouellette, Rest In Peace. You will be missed.

I was truly saddened by the passing of Dr. Ouellette. He was my doctor for over 25 years and I greatly appreciated the care and compassion he showed me and I´m sure all of his patients. Our conversations during my visits where as much about his daughter, business and golf than they were about why I was actually there. He was an excellent physician and I always felt I was receiving the best care possible. I will miss our conversations and I´m sure he will be sadly missed by so many.

Saddened on this Sunday morning to hear of the passing of such a great doctor and kind, humorous man. I had the pleasure of assisting Dr. Ouellette during many , many GI procedures at Coastal Digestive when I worked there years ago. I was warned he could be tough in the procedure room, but I was met with nothing but kindness and respect from him. Despite our very different backgrounds, we had so many interesting conversations, and he taught me so many skills as a new endo tech. I can still hear him say "This is a learning curve , Ashley and you´re learning, that´s all that counts". I always looked forward to hearing about what he had done with Hope over the weekend, as my daughter was about the same age. My sincere condolences to Sandi & Hope, Dr.Frese, Dr. Campbell , Dr. S & everyone at Coastal Digestive.
