Helen Fatone Obituary
Born in Norwich, on May 14, 1938, Helen was the daughter to the late James F. and Helen (Fitzgerald) McManus. She graduated from Norwich Free Academy in 1957. Helen was joyfully united in marriage to the love of her life, her high school sweetheart, Joseph A. Fatone on April 30, 1960. An amazing marriage and love story that most can only dream of and a wonderful example for their daughters and granddaughters.
Helen was deeply devoted to her husband and her family who meant everything to her. She was unconditional in her love for her family and friends. She especially valued family occasions and she loved to entertain as she was an accomplished cook. Helen enjoyed a nice cup of Twinnings English Breakfast tea, she loved to golf, to read, to travel and she looked forward to her trips aboard with her husband. Helen was so supportive of her family and she worked to help her family achieve their life dreams, nudging them gently with her words of encouragement and advice. She took immense pride in the accomplishments of her girls: daughters and granddaughters. She touched the lives of all who knew her and will be remembered by her kindness and generosity.
Beside her husband, she is survived by three daughters, Toni Marie Fatone and her husband, Dr. Robert Rutstein, Pamela Jean Fatone and Susan Elizabeth Soderberg and her husband, Timothy Soderberg; four granddaughters, Leigh and Brooke Soderberg and Catherine and Caroline Rutstein; and Gary "Bunky" Way, who was like a son to her. She leaves nieces and nephews too, all near and dear to her heart.
She was predeceased by brothers, Donald, Raymond and Edwin McManus; and her two sisters, Eileen McManus and Mary Burr.
Helen's family would like to thank the caregivers at Crescent Point Memory Care Unit who provided her care and comfort, Sandra Grillo at Utley & Jones Pharmacy, Dr. Kackielo and Dr. Alessandro, and the compassionate staff at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital E.R. We would like to thank all of our family and friends who have supported us on this heartbreaking Alzheimer's journey.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, 2018, at St. Patrick's Cathedral in Norwich. There will be no calling hours and burial is private.
In lieu of flowers, donations in honor of Helen may be made to Mount Sinai Hospital to the Alzheimer's Disease Research Center, Attention: Dr. Mary Sano, Ichan School of Medicine, 1 Gustave L. Levy Place, P.O. Box 1230, New York, NY 10029.
After a long goodbye, we are comforted in knowing that Helen (wife/mom/grandma) is Helen once again.

I only knew your mother through the loving descriptions of her. I recall the time you had her placed in a safe environment and how difficult that was for you. Most of all, every second of every memory you could share with her was sacred. May this be the beginning of a time in your life that seeks answers to her demise-a disease that creates unbearable sorrow. Pamela, she is at rest. I hope you all find some degree of comfort in knowing Helen no longer suffers from that dreadful disease; and comfort knowing that she was supported and loved during her final days with the same intensity as she loved you all.
