Robert Appleby Obituary

Salem - Robert Michael Appleby, 61, of Salem entered eternal life Nov. 7, 2021, after a short battle with Non-Hodgins Lymphoma at L+M Hospital with his loving family by his side. He was born July 3, 1960, in New London to Marie (DiRocco) Appleby of East Lyme and the late John Richard Appleby Sr.

He graduated from St. Mary Star of Sea Catholic School and later from New London High School, class of 1978. During his high school years, he excelled in varsity soccer, and was named in the High School All American 1977. He started his career at Electric Boat but was a carpenter by trade which led to Robert owning and operating Appleby's Woodworking and Remodeling along with his son Joshua for many years. His talents were instrumental in designing and building some of the finest restaurants in the area along with many house remodels in New London County.

He served for several years on the Salem Parks and Recreation Committee, and Planning and Zoning Board. His love for soccer brought soccer to Salem in 2001 and was the President of the Salem Soccer Club for many years. He was a coach and a mentor, and he dedicated his time to several committees in the town of Salem that benefited the children in which he received Salem Unsung Hero for all the countless hours of volunteering in 2011. He was a most selfless person you could meet; nothing was ever too much for him. He was larger than life and the world is a little less bright without him.

Besides his mother, Robert is survived by, his loving companion of many years Judy (Secchiaroli) Appleby; his son, Joshua Appleby of New London; stepdaughter, Corey Gawronski of New Haven; three siblings, Sherry Appleby of Quaker Hill, John R. Appleby Jr. of West Haven and Susan Appleby Stewart of East Lyme; nephews, Jason and Jacob; and nieces, Kim and Katie.

His family will receive relatives and friends from 1 to 4 p.m. Monday, Nov. 15, at the Impellitteri-Malia Funeral Home, 84 Montauk Ave., New London. Interment will be private. Robert was a heart transplant recipient from 1992. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to a charity of your choice, or please consider becoming an organ donor so others can benefit from the gift of life as Robert did.

Bob had more empathy than most people you meet, he had a way of not looking at a person but thru them, evaluating, measuring, finding a way to interact with them and assist anyway he could. When he first started to use social media many people were What?, I always thought it was just an extension of who he always was - teacher, sharer, friend.
Condolences Marie, Judy, Josh and Corey

Bruno and I were reminiscing about what a great time we had when you visited us in New Orleans and we got to share a traditional southern meal with you. Bob was so great. Bob was a great man and I am very sad to hear of his passing. He was my soccer coach for the vast majority of my childhood and was one of the driving factors that kept me coming back to play year after year. I have many fond memories of him on and off the field and I remember him as a very selfless person who was always spending his time to improve the lives of others. A real staple of the community and I'm sure he will be missed by many. Wishing Josh, Judy, Corey and the rest of his family the best during this difficult time.

Our condolences to Judy, Josh & Corey and the Appleby family. When we moved to Salem Bob had just set up the fledgling Salem Surge Soccer club. Our boys (Matthew & Adam) immediately joined and under Bob´s leadership, direction and sense of fun both they and the teams thrived. Adam has fond memories of trips to Gillette stadium to watch the New England Revolution, soccer tournaments on the Cape and summer holidays out to Block Island. Bob was passionate about his family, friends, work, soccer and his beloved Manchester United. He will be sadly missed but fondly remembered by all those who knew him.

Our deepest sympathies to the Appleby family. Bob was a very special friend and will be deeply missed by family, friends and the local community.
We have very special memories of Bob on the soccer fields, as a coach, mentor and promoter of soccer in Salem. Our children all benefited from his enthusiasm, passion and commitment.
Bob was also very creative with his hands and built up a trusted local business that we utilized many times. He was generous with his knowledge and you could rely on him to deliver.
May he Rest In Peace
