Sandra Burnside Obituary

SANDRA AVIS BURNSIDE Cedar Rapids Sandra Avis Burnside, 76, of Cedar Rapids, died peacefully Sunday, Jan. 9, 2022, after a two-year battle with cancer at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy. Sandy is survived by her two daughters, Melenie Burnside Krider of Yorkville, Ill., and Kathryn (Bob) McIlvanie of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; five granddaughters, Madison Krider, Michaela Krider and Maggie Krider, all of Yorkville, Ill., Gabrielle (Ben) McIlvanie of Iowa City, Iowa, and Lilliana McIlvanie of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; one grandson, Quinn (Lauren) McIlvanie of Fort Collins, Colo.; one sister, Beverly (David) Schepp of Mandan, N.D.; one brother, Leslie (Joanne) King of Minot, N.D.; sisters-in-law, Pat (Lee) Amstutz, Karen Burnside and Kim McDowell, all of Indiana; brother-in-law, David (Sheila) Burnside of Indiana; 10 nieces and nephews; 15 great-nieces and great-nephews; three great-great0nieces; and one great-great-nephew. Sandy's beloved husband, Vaughn; her mother and father, mother in-law and father-in law, brother-in-law, Earl McDowell; nephew, Adam McDowell; and niece, Heather McDowell, preceded her in death. Sandy writes: Sandra Avis Burnside was born in Minot, N.D., on Sept. 12, 1945, to Walter and Avis King. I loved my Lord, my family, my church and life itself. On Feb. 24, 1968, she married the love of her life, Vaughn Burnside, in Chesterton, Ind. They had two daughters, Melenie and Kathryn. After the girls moved out of the house, Sandy and Vaughn danced in the living room and read about a million books in retirement, always enjoying each other's company (almost always!). They laughed a lot and traveled with friends, family and together as a couple. Grandchildren were played with, loved and spoiled. Her hobbies were sewing, cooking, making pies, gardening and reading, reading, reading. Sandy wanted to include – this was written by Sandy, she always wanted to be in charge! Sandy was an active member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids and loved going on mission trips with her friends from church. A memorial service will be held in the spring or summer of 2022. A memorial fund has been established in Sandy's memory. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.teahenfuneralhome.com.
