Darrell Robert Gierich, born to the late Bob and Babe (Clara) Gierich March 4, 1956 in Joliet, passed 12/31/21 peacefully in his sleep with family by his side following a year-long battle with colon cancer.
Survived by his beloved wife of 43 years, Pam (Cook) Gierich, 3 children, 7 grandchildren; Jeremy (Stephanie) Gierich; Grace, Evelyn, Benjamin and Clara. Jessica (Nathan) Zabala; Madison, Emily and Alexa. Justin Gierich. Siblings John (Rhonda) Gierich. Sue (Ken) Ingram. Mother-in-law Betty (Dennis) Cook. Sister-in-law Patti (Cook) Bailey. Nieces, nephews, and many close lifelong friends.
Throughout his life, Darrell was an avid bowler and softball player, and definitely a creature of habit. He had a lifelong love/hate relationship with the Chicago cubs, enjoyed the musical likings of Black Sabbath and sipping on an old Milwaukee or two. In his later years, Darrell enjoyed nothing more than being surrounded by family, and being the self-proclaimed "Big Mean Ugly Guy" adoring Grandpa watching his grandchildren do what kids do best; and doting grandpa that he was, each grandchild was lovingly granted their own special nickname.
A come-as-you-are visitation will be held Saturday January 8th from 12:00-3:00 at Blackburn-Giegerich-Sonntag Funeral Home, 1500 Black Road, with a small service immediately following. Food and fellowship after will be held at Crossroads Christian Church, 2312 Essington Road. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to: Lightways Hospice Care, Lurie's Children's Hospital, or any cancer care charity of your choice.
