1958 - 2014

WICHITA - Gary Wayne Haviland, 55, of Wichita went to be with the Lord on Feb. 12, 2014, after a long illness.

Gary was born on Oct. 6, 1958, in Newton. He spent the early part of his life in Newton. Gary had many interests, including spending many hours playing his guitar. He was creative and wrote poetry and had several poems published throughout the years.

Gary deeply loved his family and was concerned with how everyone in the family was doing. He had a great love of the Lord and shared his faith freely. He will be greatly missed by his loving family.

Gary is survived by his father, Albert Haviland of Wichita; step-father, Keith Simms of Newton; brothers, Michael Haviland and David (Missy) Haviland, both of Newton; sisters, Pamela (Michael) Whalen of Mesquite, Texas, Annette (Ron) Allee of Goddard; 12 nephews and nieces; and 11 great-nephews and nieces. He also is survived by 15 uncles and aunts; many cousins; and his best friend and companion dog, Rufus.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Joyce (Kindt) Sims; grandparents, Floyd Haviland, Carl Penner, Georgia (Cooper) Penner, Robert Kindt and Lucille (Swisher) Kindt; an uncle, Claude Haviland; a cousin, Lee Britton; and a great-niece, Kinsie Whalen.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2014, at Petersen Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be 5 to 9 p.m. Monday evening at the funeral home, with the family receiving friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Newton.
