Arthur Richard Marshall, Sr.
Memorial services for Arthur Richard Marshall, Sr. will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 17, 2007, at Peace Lutheran Church, 828 West Main Street, Grass Valley.On March 5, 2007, while at Spring Hill Manor Convalescent Hospital in Grass Valley, Art passed peacefully into eternal life with his family by his side. He was 76 years old.Art Marshall was born November 19, 1930, in Jersey City, New Jersey to David L. and Mary Marshall. It was there that he met his loving wife of 55 years, Caroline Andersen. They married on April 21, 1951.Art was drafted into the U.S. Army on January 11, 1952. After basic training, he was sent to the Korean War and was a member of the 32nd Infantry Regiment of the 7th Division. Art courageously served our country for 10 months and 22 days on the front line, and was involved in many fierce battles including the famous battle at Pork Chop Hill. He was honorably discharged on October 10, 1953, and received the Combat Infantry Badge, the Korean Service Medal, two Bronze Service Stars, and the United Nations Service Medal. After he was discharged, Art returned to Jersey City, New Jersey and began his 40 year occupation as a meat cutter, beginning with the A&P Market. In October of 1954, Art and Caroline became proud parents of their first son. Art moved his family to Santa Clara, California in 1957 and over the coming years became a parent of three more sons who were a source of pride for him throughout his life. He continued cutting meat for a number of markets, the last being the H and S Food Villa Market on El Camino in Santa Clara.Art loved playing football in the street with his sons, bowling, the outdoors, fishing and hunting. He was gifted in writing and art. One of his favorite pastimes was sitting in the sun and listening to the New York Yankee games on the radio. He was also a big New York Giants fan. In later years he loved playing dominos, Backgammon, and Pinochle with family members. The highlight of every year for Art was the annual family reunion that he and Caroline established at Buck's Lake. The tradition has lasted over 40 years.Survivors include his wife Caroline; his four sons Arthur, Jr. (Linda) of Santa Clara, CA, Steven (Arlene) of Reno, NV, and the twins Daniel (Criss) of Saratoga, CA and Eric (Chrissie) of Grass Valley, CA; seven grandchildren: Stacy, Kyle, Matt, Kim, Kayleigh, David, and Tyler; one great grandchild due to arrive in June; and many nieces, nephews, grand nieces, and grand nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, one sister, and one granddaughter.In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to: Hospice of the Foothills, 2399 Nevada City Highway, Grass Valley, CA 95945 or Shriners Hospital for Children, 2425 Stockton Blvd., Sacramento, CA 95817-2215.
