LAKELAND - Sharon Rose Alcorn, age 64, of Lakeland, went home to be with Jesus in the evening of Friday, April 10, 2015, at Winter Haven Hospital following a heroic battle with pancreatic cancer.
She was born to the late Philip and Delilah Green on August 8, 1950, in Du Quoin, Illinois, but was proud to have called Lakeland home since 1983. Sharon graduated from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale with Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Speech Pathology and Audiology. She dedicated over 31 years to the Polk County School Board, committed to helping special needs children across the county and was devoted to ensuring they led rich and meaningful lives. Sharon was passionate about many things, but most significantly to helping others. She was actively involved in the Polk County Special Olympics and the Very Special Arts programs. On any given day she could be found putting service above self and encouraging others to succeed when the world said they couldn't.
Sharon is survived by her two sons and their wives, Philip Teddy & Shelley Alcorn and James Sam & Haili Alcorn, her grandsons Isaiah and Elijah and her canine children and grandchildren.
A celebration of her life will be held on Thursday, April 16 at Heath Funeral Chapel, 328 S. Ingraham Ave., Lakeland, FL, beginning at 7 p.m.
The family will receive friends from 6-7 prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in her honor to the Humane Society of Polk County, which she loved; or the Winter Haven Hospital Cassidy Cancer Center Foundation, which showed her such love.
