William Bassett Obituary

William L. Bassett, 87, of Brandenburg, passed away Monday, Nov. 16, 2015, at Baptist Health in Louisville.

Mr. Bassett was born May 11, 1928, the son of Noah Francis and Mary Palestine Blair Bassett.

He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, proudly serving in World War II and the Korean Conflict, a member of St. John the Apostle Catholic Church, Meade County Senior Citizens, VFW Post No. 11404 in Brandenburg, AMVETS No. 0103 in Vine Grove, DAV No. 3 in Elizabethtown, American Legion No. 113 in Elizabethtown, Meade County National Active and Retired Federal Employees 1512 in Brandenburg, Meade County Lions Club, as well as being an avid supporter of Meade County High School athletics, especially boys and girls basketball.

Mr. Bassett was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife, Martha Elizabeth Bassett; his stepmother, Ethel Riney; two sisters, Elsie Mae Logsdon and Nettie Marie Bassett; and two brothers, James Robert and Joseph A. Bassett.

He is survived by two children, Donna Jean Bassett and Mary Annette Stednitz, both of Denver, Colorado; 18 stepchildren, Barbara Ramers of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Becky Deverts of Haughton, Louisiana, Betty Milan of Highland, Illinois, Mary Francis Holtz of St. Louis, Missouri, Joseph Hager, George Leo Masterson, Martha Agnes Speaks, Margaret Joann Powell, Geraldine Marie Shanahan, Patricia Taylor, William Owen Masterson, Florence Jean Allen, Paul Edward Masterson and James Gregory Masterson, all of Brandenburg, Pius Bertrand Hager of Garland, Texas, Mary Lillian Hay of Payneville, Bertha Rose Heard of Rockfield and John Francis Masterson of Flaherty; a grandchild; and numerous stepgrandchildren; stepgreat-grandchildren; stepgreat-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian burial is at 10 a.m. Friday at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church in Brandenburg with the Rev. Kevin Bryan officiating. Burial with military honors follows in St. Martin Cemetery in Flaherty.

Visitation is from noon to 8 p.m. Thursday and continues at 8 a.m. Friday at Hager Funeral Home in Brandenburg.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to St. John Church Building Fund or the American Cancer Society.

A grandfather to my girls and to every kid in Meade County. He cheered at every game, but more importantly for everybody! He was a true inspiration and a lesson to us all. We will miss you!

This man taught me the meaning of being gentle and kind, he always put a smile on my face and I loved to hear his stories; he was so involved in his community and a true inspiration to others. My condolences to the family and to everyone he blessed with his presence.
