After moving from the ministry to teaching, he attended Michigan State University to earn his Masters Degree in Education. He was a teacher for the Avondale School District for 20 years. His passion was to help others. He showed it in many ways, especially by teaching the Alternative Education students. Richard was a member of the Troy Lions Club, he was on the Troy School District Board of Education, President of Good Samaritan Lutheran Church, and the organist at Lutheran Church of the Master many years ago. He was also a piano teacher. Richard enjoyed reading. He belonged to the Book Club for the Blind and another book club as well. He enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family. When recently asked what was the most important thing in his life, his answer was Phyllis and his adult children.
