John McCarthy Obituary

John E. McCarthy July 22, 1925 - Dec 28, 2012 John was born in Manhattan Beach, CA to George and Elizabeth McCarthy, but grew up in Riverside, CA, graduating from Riverside Poly High School. He was a veteran of World II, having served in the 10th Regiment, 5th Division of Patton's 3rd Army and earned a Bronze Star and four Battle Stars on his European Campaign Ribbon, as well as a French Medal of Honor. His name was placed on the Wall of Rememberance in Normandy. On September 4, 1948 he was married in Sacramento, CA to Jean Ready. He graduated from the University of California, Berkeley in l949, as well as post grad studies at Stanford, Santa Clara, Michigan State, and UCLA. In 1959 he moved with his family to Pasadena to serve as Executive Vice President and General Manager of the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce. He was a forty year member of the Pasadena Tournament of Roses, and President of the Pasadena Kiwanis Club. Upon retiring he moved with his wife Jean to Olympia, Washington. Though retired, he organized the Crime Stoppers of Olympia and Thurston County. He is survived by his wife of 64 years Jean, son Stephen (Marianne), granddaughters Brianna, Meaghan, and Caitlin, daughter Sue Canfield (Roger), and sister Margaret McCarthy Ivey (Richard). He was preceded in death by his son Scott McCarthy. Services will be held Wednesday, January 16, 2013 at Noon at St. Michael Westside Chapel, 1835 Overhulse Drive, Olympia. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to www.woundedwarriorsproject.org, Thurston County Crime Stoppers, or to Providence Sound Homecare Hospice. John, or Jack as he was commonly called by his relatives, was a very honorable and thoughtful man. He was like a BIG brother. Love Always "The Watsons"
