Mrs. Rhoda Custer

1941 - 2016

Mrs. Rhoda (Hykes) Custer, 74, of Waynesboro, PA passed away Saturday, January 23, 2016 in NMS Health Care, Hagerstown, MD.
Born May 24, 1941 in Greencastle, PA, She was the daughter of the late Amos E. and Alice M. (Kennedy) Hykes.
She graduated from Greencastle High School with the class of 1961.
She married Bernard LeRoy "Bernie" Custer April 13, 1963 at Hollowell Brethren In Christ Church. She and her husband moved to Waynesboro in May of 1964.
Mrs. Custer attended Waynesboro Bible Church, assisting with their social activities and teaching Sunday School. She loved making cakes and was awarded "Miss Betty Crocker of Tomorrow" in 1961. She volunteered with Meals on Wheels for 41 years and baked cakes for 54 years. She enjoyed bowling for 24 years and won "National Doubles" with her cousin, Shirley Piper in 1991.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her three children: Camilla M. Lourdon, Waynesboro, Kevin L. Custer, husband of Susan, Littlestown, PA, Jerry A. Custer, husband of Wendy, Kent Store, VA; Nine grandchildren: Zach Lourdon, Seth Lourdon, Ian Lourdon, Carter Hammond, Renee Custer, Jeremy Custer, Trevor Hammond, Alden Custer and Holly Custer; Siblings: Anna Haines and husband Bob, Harry E. Hykes and Wife Sharon, both of Greencastle, Vera Teach and husband Elwood, of Hagerstown, MD, Mary Johns and husband Fred, of Birmingham, AL, Ruth Shilling and Husband Bill, Susan Sherrill and husband Jim, both of Waynesboro, Margaret Bumbaugh and husband Harry, of Zullinger, PA, Grace Shepard Mellott and husband Monte, of Waynesboro, Naomi Newcomb and husband Lynn, of Sabinsville, PA, and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Esther Diebert Roderick.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 am, Saturday, January 30, 2016 at Five Forks Brethren In Christ Church, 9244 Five Forks Rd., Waynesboro, with Rev. Darell E. Gentry officiating. Burial will follow in Parklawns Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 P.M until 8:00 P.M. on Friday, January 29, 2016 at Five Forks Brethren In Christ Church and again at 9:00 am on Saturday, January 30, 2016, one hour before the service.
Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, Waynesboro, is handling the arrangements.
