Kenneth Degen Obituary

Kenneth E. Degen, 76, of Telford, formerly of Long Island, NY, passed away on Friday, July 13, 2018 in Cape May, NJ. He and his beloved wife Meredith “Murphy” (Ellis) Hunsberger Degen celebrated their 9th wedding anniversary in March, 2018. Born September 27, 1941, in Queens, NY, he was a son of the late Arthur and Marie (Schlotthauer) Degen. A U.S. Army veteran, he proudly served his country from 1961-1964. He was a highly respected and admired employee for the New York State Department of Transportation where he worked as a civil engineer for more than 30 years prior to his retirement in 2003. Ken made many lasting friendships during his tenure. Ken was outgoing, with a larger-than-life personality. He enjoyed being surrounded by family, friends, and especially his grandkids. You could always find him at their sports and school activities, making friends wherever he went. His love for adventure would often include trains, boats, and planes; but locally you could find him out for breakfast at the Energy Station. He enjoyed square dancing with Murphy, and he had a love for Dunkin Donuts coffee that knew no bounds. Ken was preceded in death by his first wife of 42 years, Karen (Meyer) Degen, who died in 2005. He is survived by their three daughters: Kirsten Degen of Long Island, Kimberly Malmquist and her husband Paul of Souderton, and Katherine Degen of Long Island. Ken is survived by his wife Murphy and her sons: Jamie Hunsberger and his wife Aimee of California, Chris Hunsberger and his wife Stefanie of Telford. He has eight beloved grandchildren: Megan, Allison, Noah, Caroline, Nathan, Matthew, Braden, and Brynn. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, July 21, 2018 at 11 AM in the Sadler-Suess Funeral Home, 33 N. Main St., Telford. Family will receive friends from 10-11 AM prior to the service. Interment is private. In loving memory of Ken, please take your loved ones to breakfast. www.sadlersuessfuneralhome.net

Our deepest prayers and condolences to all of Ken's family and friends ...we are sorry to hear of his passing. Many of us at NYSDOT have fond memories of Ken. He used to play hearts or pitch card games at lunchtime with Connie Myott, Terry Brown, Ed Beuel and several others back in the late '60's and early '70's. Yes he was on the credit union committee for a very long time where I got a loan for my first car in 1967 when I started. We all grew up, got married and started our families. Thanks for the memories!! My husband and I love breakfast and coffee out too, this week we toasted to Ken. Deepest sympathies, Pat and Ed Brower

Such a charmer! Ken was a great man, full of integrity, love for all and a smile to light the path. I will carry his spirit in my thoughts and hope to meet him at the pearly gates if I can manage to behave from now until then. God bless you girls!

So sorry to read of Ken Degan's passing. Back in the 1970's and 80's we were all members of the United Methodist Church of Islip and Karen, if I recall, taught in the Islip Community Nursery School. We were sorry to see you move away but we remember your family fondly.
We extend our Sincerest sympathy to all.
