Diane Marlow Obituary

LEXINGTON - Diane Alford Marlow, 68, died July 7, 2011 after a long fight with lung cancer. The family wishes to thank the compassionate care of Dr. Marshall, Dr. Madden and all of their respective staff members. They made her last years and especially the last week as comfortable as possible. Diane enjoyed sixteen years of marriage to her husband and loved the combined family of her two daughters and her husband's three daughters and one son. They were all her children and she loved them equally with all her heart.

Diane is survived by her husband, Dan Marlow; mother, Katherine Alford; sister, Debra (Nelson) Gammans; children, Wendy Waddle, Christy (Mark) Pernat, Mark Marlow, Laura Marlow, Anne (Alex) Beuhring, and Lynn (Tom) Van Tiem; grandchildren, Tyler Waddle, Kayla Marlow, Ian Swiedler, Riley Pernat, Kevin Beuhring, Ella Beuhring, Tommy Van Tiem, Evelyn Van Tiem, Joe Van Tiem, and Elodie Pernat. The grandchildren were the light and love of Diane's life.

Diane started her career with the state government at South Carolina Parks Recreation and Tourism, where she did double duty as a state employee and also served as the Executive Director of Keep America Beautiful of South Carolina. In that role she was very active in bringing the Adopt a Highway from Texas to South Carolina and in raising the public's awareness of the damage litter does to our beautiful state. From PRT Diane went to the SC Department of Health and Environmental Control's Office of Solid Waste Reduction and Recycling. She was a project manager for the office's outreach and education programs, working closely with schools across the state on curriculum materials and setting up recycling programs as well as making countless presentations to students. In addition, she was the office's resident expert on backyard composting, helping recycling coordinators and residents.

Diane loved people. She was a cheerleader and she carried that enthusiasm over to her adult life. Her love of life was contagious and as cheerleading captain and homecoming queen she inspired others to enjoy and celebrate all of life's moments. She was always ready to give an encouraging word to those in need. She participated in a number of beauty contests, including the Miss Georgia Pageant, where she was voted Miss Congeniality by her peers. She was very active in the Girl Scouts for many years. She loved children and also taught swimming for many years. She dedicated her life to be of service to this wonderful world and its people.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 12, 2011 at Saxe Gotha Presbyterian Church, 5503 Sunset Blvd., Lexington, SC. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, July 11, 2011 at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel. www.caughmanharmanfuneralhome.net

I had the pleasure of working with Diane through the many years in her different capacities. She was a delightful person who never met a stranger. She adored her family and I felt as if I knew you all even though we never met. She was dedicated to recycling and keeping our country beautiful and shared her knowledge with love and enthusiasm. I was so sad to hear that Diane is gone. She and I worked together in the early days of our KAB careers and she was such a positive influence on Rock Hill's Clean & Green program. I remember traveling with her to conferences and planning events together. She was such fun to be around and I am sorry I lost touch with her over the past several years. My heart goes out to Dan and the rest of the family.

When I was in the Miss LaGrange Pageant, Diane, having won the year before me, helped me with makeup, etc, preparing for the pageant. I always thought she was as beautiful on the inside as she was on the outside. RIP, old friend.

I was so sad to hear about Diane’s illness and passing but wanted you to know how she changed my life and how grateful I am to have had the opportunity to learn from her. She gave me my first job, not only in the nonprofit arena, but in environmental education with Keep SC Beautiful. She taught me all about recycling, event planning and, more importantly, fundraising. We planned numerous recycling, adopt-a-highway and KAB conference. I’m still doing this type job today. Diane also gave me the best childrearing advice. When I got married and began raising a step-daughter, Diane provided these perfect words of wisdom, “You and your husband must agree on how you are raising your children. You must be together – it’s the best foundation you can give them.” She was right and I have shared this will all my friends having children for the last 20 years. I am certainly blessed to have been touched by her.

Dear Christie and Wendy,
What an honor to have your mom in my life. I admired her very much and she was an inspiration to me. As my neighbor, she set a standard of caring in our neighborhood. She was a wonderful mom and I often thought of her as I raised my children. As the PTA President of Oak Grove Elem., she worked diligently for the children in our community. Diane was always a positive force for improving the lives of children. She had a way of leading by example, and she was truly a servant leader...just as Jesus directed us to do. I rejoice in her life and celebrate her legacy. With Love,

I can remember riding with Diane to the compost facility in Florence SC. Must have been around November of 2004. I was working at Shaw AFB at the time. She was excited about that project and many others that were focused on landfill diversion and recycling. She impacted my life positivley and made me aware of how important our environment is to us and future generations. As a matter of fact I ended up with a degree in environmental sciences. I learned of her passing through DHEC. She obviously made many friends there and was admired to the point Mr. Chesley was compelled to get the word out to all of her extened friends, those of us who knew her through our professions. She was an environmental warrior and her dedication will live on through our works. Remember, Faith makes all things possible, not easy. May God bless you all in these trying times.

I was fornuate to have served with Diane on the Citizen's Advisory Committee for the Town of Lexington. She was always very kind, very involved. As one would hope to do in life, Diane made a mark on the world, left it a better place.
