Born in Walhalla, he was a son of the late Glenn Davis and Nannie Farmer Abbott.
Mr. Abbott was a 1943 graduate of Walhalla High School, attended Clemson College and was a 1950 graduate of the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science. He had retired as a funeral director/embalmer from Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, following 55 years of service.
A member of Eastlan Baptist Church, he was director of the Homebound Department, a member of the Men’s Bible Class and a former deacon. He held offices in the Greenville Baptist Association and in 1978 was named Layman of the Year.
He was also a member of Woodmen of the World, the Pleasantburg Lion’s Club, where he held all offices and was District Cabinet Secretary of District 32A at one time.
Mr. Abbott was a World War II veteran of the United States Navy.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are three daughters, Mrs. Lee (Marsha) Maxwell of Greenville, Mrs. Dwight (Julie) Williams of Columbia, Mrs. Gene (Laura) Crane of Summerville; two sisters, Mrs. Lucile A Harper of Walhalla, Mrs. Henry B. (Deane) Wells, III of Pickens; eleven grandchildren, Eleanor M. Macaulay of Sylva, NC, Jennifer M. Isett of Greenville, Leslie M. Watt of Winston-Salem, NC, Mary M. Bulla of Greenville, Leanne M. Burnett of Greenwood, Caroline M. Maxwell of Greenville, Samuel A. Williams of Columbia, Meredith W. Long of Columbia, Jackson D. Crane of Summerville, Andrew A. Crane of Summerville, Collin A. Crane of Summerville; eleven great-grandchildren, Eliza M. Macaulay, Lee E. Macaulay and Kate E. Macaulay all of Sylva, NC, Anna Claire Watt, Jacob A. Watt and Maxwell C. Watt, all of Winston-Salem, NC, Ethan L. Isett, Luke E. Isett and Sarah E. Isett, all of Greenville, Abigail A. Burnett and Edwin H. Burnett, both of Greenwood. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, John Julian Abbott, Wm. Benjamin Abbott, James Franklin Abbott, Glenn Farmer “Red” Abbott and grandmother, Julia Cobb Waite.
Memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
Visitation will be held Sunday, February 1, 2009, from 1:00 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. at Eastlan Baptist Church. The funeral service will follow at 3:00 p.m. at the church. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park.
