Luther Baxley Obituary

Luther Edward Baxley CAYCE Luther Edward Baxley, 65, passed away on September 18, 2017 after an inspiring hard fought battle to overcome so many medical challenges. Born in Hemingway, SC, he was the son of the late Thomas Orin and Lillian Hanna Baxley and beloved husband of Jana Simpson Baxley. Luther is survived by his wife, Jana; daughters, Chasity (Charles) Seegars, Ashley (Keith) Tacy; and son, Eric Luther Baxley; brothers, Freddy (Karen) Baxley, Lindy (Susie) Baxley, David (Marcia) Baxley, Terry (Beth) Baxley; sisters, Peggy (Johnny) Helmke, Lucy (Warren) Finney, Leila (Allen) Balliet; eight grandchildren; and a large, loving extended family. Luther was predeceased by his parents; sister, Bonnie Tanner; brother, William Baxley; and stepson, Cory Shcolnik. "Louie" was born August 21, 1952 and grew up on the family farm. He was a 1970 graduate of Hemingway High School and proudly enlisted in the US Army in 1971 and served in Vietnam. After being honorably discharged, he worked in construction, helping to build Carolina Eastman and Teepak in the Sandy Run Community. In 1976 he began his career with the US Postal Service in Columbia and dedicated 29 years to service. In 2011 he joined Amazon.com as a charter employee with the West Columbia location, where he worked for five years. Throughout his life, Louie was a competitor; there was not a sport or game that he didn't love and excel at. He especially loved playing golf and tennis. He also loved gardening, woodworking and thoroughly enjoyed the many hours spent on his tractor taking care of his pond. No matter where Louie worked or played, he developed lifelong friendships with his positive outlook, dedication and hard work, willingness to help anyone in need, and his good natured spirit. Luther loved and trusted the Lord and loved his family with all of his heart. Visitation will be Saturday, September 23, 2017, from 5-7 p.m. at Thompson Funeral Home, 200 State Street, West Columbia. A memorial service will be held Sunday, September 24, 2017 at 2 pm at Trinity Baptist Church, 2003 Charleston Hwy, Cayce. A private graveside service will be held at a later date. Pallbearers will be nephews, Rick Baxley, Patrick Baxley, John Helmke, Michael Balliet, Jeffrey Conn and Jeremy Conn. Luther was a member of Trinity Baptist Church, Cayce. If desired, memorials in lieu of flowers may be made to Indiantown Presbyterian Church Cemetery Fund, 4865 Hemingway Hwy, Hemingway, SC 29554 or Trinity Baptist Church Music Ministry, 2003 Charleston Hwy, Cayce, SC 29033. I will always remember Louie as a friendly man with a winning smile and a hug. I know the anniversaries are the hardest for family. You are in my prayers Jana and Eric. I know of the heartache but I'm sure you hold on to the fact that you will see him again one day.
