Nancy Rimer Obituary

HAINES CITY, Fla. - Nancy Hunter Henslee Rimer died Friday, March 12, 2010 in Clermont, Florida, after a courageous battle with Pulmonary Fibrosis.

Nancy was born June 29, 1939 in Ogden, Utah, to Elton Glenn and Jane "Jennie" Taylor Hunter. Nancy grew up at the family home on Van Buren Avenue in Ogden, and graduated from Ogden High School in 1957. After graduation, Nancy attended Weber College and began working for the U.S. Government at Hill Air Force Base. There she met and married Joseph "Joe" M. Henslee on August 13, 1959. Nancy continued to work at Hill until 1962 when the couple first moved to Salt Lake City, and then later to Columbia, South Carolina.

Nancy raised three children, and was a homemaker for many years, but was also very involved in a variety of work activities and personal interests during that time. Nancy loved to sew, making dresses, quilts and costumes for family, friends, and church members. She loved a host of other arts and crafts, and worked at the Dutch Door in Columbia where she shared that love and skill with others. As an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she fulfilled various callings in the Relief Society and Primary, as well as the Family History Center. Nancy also had a musical gift, and played the piano and organ beautifully. She shared her love of music with her children and grandchildren, and served several musical callings within her church. She also had a lifelong interest in history and classic literature.

What Nancy enjoyed most was spending time with her children and grandchildren, and was always so very proud of their accomplishments.

Nancy returned to school at the University of South Carolina, earning her BA in Anthropology in 1983. She and Joe were divorced in 1983, and she returned to work at the Judge Advocate General (JAG) Office at Fort Jackson for several years. After her retirement from the federal government, she continued her service to others, working as a Recreation / Activity Therapist at the Dowdy-Gardner and Brian Centers in Columbia. She married Morgan Rimer in Lexington, SC on October 14, 1995. After Morgan's death in October 2001, she continued to work until her retirement from the Brian Center in 2008.

Her most recent adventure was her move to Palm Krest Manor in Haines City, Florida, where she resumed her skills learned as an activity therapist, providing comfort and counseling to the other residents. She loved her time there, and was very fond of Brooke, Mary, and the entire staff. She loved the residents, and they adored her.

She is survived by her three children, Teresa Henslee-Downer (Bruce), Groveland, FL; Joey Henslee (Wendy), Alpharetta, GA; Glynnis Smith (fiance Philip), Irmo, SC; five grandchildren, Ashley Dale and Samuel Henslee, Chase and Caleigh Smith, and Carolina Harris, and her brother, Robert Hunter (Carolyn), Salt Lake City, UT.

She is preceded in death by her parents, brother Glen, and sister Joyce Clark.

Services will be held on Wednesday, March 17th at 11:00 AM at Leavitt's Mortuary, 836 36th Street in Ogden, Utah. Interment will be at Leavitt's Aultorest Memorial Park, where she will be laid to rest beside her parents and brother.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff at the Heart of Florida Regional Medical Center for their dedication and compassion to Nancy and her family. The family also wishes to thank the Mike Conley Hospice House for their love, care and service. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider a donation to Cornerstone Hospice, Mike Conley Hospice House (Clermont, FL) on behalf of Nancy Rimer.

One little story. We four were in your mom and dad's VW bug (don't know what year it was) - and it caught fire. I said, Well that doesn't matter, because the men are in the front seat. Joe said, well, the engine is in the back!!!! If you could have seen Nancy and I piling out of the back just as soon as he stopped that little car. It was really funny.

Dear Teresa,
When I think of your mom I remember her bright smile and her many talents. I was always fascinated by her spunk and energy. Of course, anytime I see a VW van (of any color) I smile and think of Nancy and a few day trips she took us on.
I'm not sure how much "hanging out" takes place in heaven, but I'd like to think that Amelia and Nancy have had a chance to hangout and catch up because I know they sure loved each other.
And, I love you! I can't wait to see you and continue our friendship.
All My Love,
Laurie Franklin

Dear Teresa,
Your mom was always kind and generous to me and my family. I know my mom really valued her friendship and prayed often to know best how she could be a supportive friend to your mom. Looking back on it that orange VW bus must have gotten a million miles with her taking you kids and lots of friends to a million appointments.

March 19, 2010

Dear Theresa, Joey, Glynnis and your families,

Nancy was a wonderful person and a friend to me from the time my family moved to Columbia, SC, in 1975. She had the gift of compassion for others and was extremely talented in many areas. She and I had many happy adventures over the years. After I went abroad to work and we were not directly in touch with each other, she was in my thoughts and prayers often, and has been continuously for the past year. Her example and the things I learned from her will continue to enrich my life. My prayers will be with all of you during this difficult time.

Love,
Pat Fratangelo

Nancy was a good friend and wonderful co-worker. The love and energy that she shared with the residents was immeasureable, and the quilt-making entries will be forever be remembered here at Tucker Center. Please tell Caroline that Robyn and I are thinking about her too. Nancy shared her heart as well as the hearts of her grandchildren with us. Dear Teresa,

Please know that my thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family. In time, the good memories will help ease some of the sorrow you must feel now. Give yourself time and just know that in doing so you will have a whole "memory book" full of all the happy times you shared together.
Peace be with you....Rita

Dear Teresa and family,

I was so sorry to hear of Nancy's passing. She worked with me in Activities at the Brian Center for several years and was a true asset to our department. She led the residents in quilting and she and the residents won first place in the state of South Carolina (South Carolina Activity Professional's Association)for one of the the quilts they made. She loved our residents and would do anything to help and comfort them. I appreciate anyone there who gave that comfort and care back to her. She made my wedding gown three years ago when I married Steve, and it was beautiful. She was a very special lady and she will be terribly missed by all who were blessed enough to know her. You all are in my thoughts and prayers, and everyone at the Brian Center also send there condolences.
Sincerely,
Linda Tucker

I WORKED WITH NANCY FOR MANY YEARS AND ENJOYED HER COMPANIONSHIP SO VERY MUCH.WHEN SHE MOVED AWAY, I WAS SO VERY SAD AND MISSED HER "CUTTING" HUMOR. SHE IS THE TALK OF TUCKER CENTER (WHERE SHE ALSO WORKED!) AND EVERYONE IS TALKING ABOUT HOW SAD THAT SHE HAS GONE. I KNOW SHE WAS SIMPLY CRAZY ABOUT HER CHILDREN, BECAUSE SHE TALKED ABOUT THEM INCESSANTLY! HER FAMILY IS IN MY THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS.
