William Pope Sherrod

William Pope Sherrod WINNSBORO - William Pope Sherrod died Saturday, December 14, 2013. He was born March 17, 1949, in Columbia, SC. He was the son of the late Elizabeth Rebecca McMeekin Sherrod and the late Reeves Giles Sherrod. He was the beloved grandson of the late Elizabeth Rebecca Douglass McMeekin. He was named for his seventh great-grandfather William Pope of Isle of Wight, Nansemond and Westmoreland counties, Virginia. A 1971 graduate of Erskine College with a B.A. degree in Social Science and a minor in Biology, he owned clothing and seafood businesses at Hilton Head Island, SC, and Columbia, SC, and was retired from the South Carolina Department of Social Services. He was a Deacon and member of New Hope ARP Church in Blackstock, SC. He served as chairman of Christ Central Ministries in Winnsboro, SC, chairman of the Fairfield County Historical Commission, as a board member of the Fairfield County Historical Society, and was a member of the Mount Zion Society and the Winnsboro Cotillion. He is survived by his wife Norvelle De Treville Williams Sherrod and his daughter Brock McMeekin Sherrod. Graveside services will be held 2 P.M, Tuesday, December 17, 2013, at Bethel ARP Cemetery in Winnsboro, SC, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Clyde T. McCants and James E. Burroughs. The family will receive friends following the service in Bethel ARP Church fellowship hall in Winnsboro. Pallbearers are George Gregg Douglass, Clyde Eugene Hinnant, James Milton Hinnant, Dr. Hayne Douglass McMeekin, John Stephen McMeekin, Lawton George Parker, and James Carlisle Stevenson. Honorary pallbearers are Alex Bailie, Frank Blair, David Brown, Doug Corkern, Gordon Doty, David Ellison, Calvert Huffines, Kent Langley, Harry Mims, James MacNeal, Lamar Moberly, Franklin Sams, Monty Weaver, Furman White, Robert Wilcox, and Sheppard Williams.
