On Monday, Dec. 13, 2021, Carl E. Calianno, passed peacefully in hospice care after a brief illness. He lost his struggle with life just short of his 96 birthday.
Born in Scranton on Dec. 16, 1925, to the late Alfonso and Antonietta Pica Calianno. Just before graduation from Scranton Tech in 1943, he entered employment with Consolidated Molded Products. Then joined the United States Navy at the age of 18 on Feb. 17, 1944. Involved in WWII, receiving European Theater Ribbon (one star), American Theater Ribbon victory Medal, completing his service and was honorably discharged on May 9, 1946. He married the former Claire Marie Serio in 1948. They were married 73 years.
His legacy is in his family, Carl Jr. (Carol), of North Wales, Pa.; Thomas (Cheryl), Alburtis, Pa.; Jane Lupia (Gino), Oldsmar, Fla.; Cathy Voyack (Mark), Old Forge; Joseph (Susan) Severn, Md.; and Grace Williams (Wayne), Throop, Pa. He enjoyed and was loved by his 15 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Quick with a smile, he was known as a wonderful Italian patriarch that could fix anything. His house is a testimony of that. His kids enjoyed many of those skills/gifts. He worked at Consolidated until it closed in the mid-1970s, but continued employment at Atlas Industries until retirement in 1988. After that, as a couple, Carl and Claire remained active in line dancing, with the senior center in their shows and hoagie sales. Most of all, they were there for their children/grandchildren as they were the hub for holidays gatherings of great Italian specialties.
He was brother to Mary Cadden, Concetta Wolfe, Angie Spindler and Antonietta Newbould, Texas. He was preceded in death by all his brothers. John, Dominic, Vito and Joseph, and also preceded in death by grandchildren, Frankie and Diana Voyack.
The family would like to extend special a thank you to Pamela, Devin, Desiree, Heather and Ashley for all the loving personal care this past year. Also, Geisinger CMC ER and eighth floor nursing staff. In addition, Hospice of the Sacred Heart as they were amazing in caring for dad in his last days.
